Need a spec for a friend. Having been out of the loop for about 2 years as I haven't been building much I'm a little stuck with all the choices available.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

Budget of £500, just the PC. Already have the monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.

Thanks!

Ah, knew I had forgotten something! Gaming.

Operating system will be needed, however he's a student so any relevant student deals will probably be used.

He should check if he has a MSDNAA account, you get free copies of Windows etc. Otherwise students can get windows 7 for £30 pounds.

Putting a spec together now

Can he reuse his disc drive?
You could always pick a cheaper hard drive if you had to get exactly on budget.
For not much more money it could be changed to a quad core cpu.

What resolution will you be gaming at?

Sorry to jump in here but, regarding windows 7, I am also a student but I don't think you can get it for £30 anymore. If you go to where it was:

http://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/studentoffer/

The buy button for windows 7 isnt there anymore, only for office :(

Sad times.

Well I got to jump in here....
as for 'sad times' I was a college lout for 3 yrs of my life (1 day a week) just a few yrs ago. I got sweet FA entitlements and didn't expect any.
I am fuming that students can get software cheaper because they are students, why is that? my gran doesn't get any help with her OS and she's been paying into the system for 40 yrs, so whats the deal!
OK rant over but it bloody annoy's me when people get stuff cheaper for no reason.

There is still "Student Prices" for Windows 7 Upgrade versions if you look around. Certainly wortha look if you are a student.

I agree that pensioners and other groups should get some kind of discount for software - for many the price premium is stopping people from participating in the digital world.

However, from my understanding the reason for the cheaper student pricing is not a "public service" reason, but a far more cynical "profit driven" one. If students get discounted software from one brand - then they are more likely to buy it, get used to it and buy it in the future. When some of these students graduate and go into business they are already partial to a brand of software - and are more likely to use it/ implement it in their company. This applies even more to Computing Students who get much of their software for free for this very reason. As these discounts are handed out by the companies themselves (not the government) then it isn't really much of a scandal.

However, I would love to see some government schemes to give elderly people discounted software/hardware/ADSL. After all, they have paid into the system for so long and have a lot to gain by going online.

I agree, but I want cheap software as I spent all my loan on alcohol.

Well my university gives me all MS software for free, I think it might be cause im doing a IT related course but I got win 7 pro 32+64 bit for free :P.

I think we will probably need another disc drive. I'm not sure what size the screen is, but at a guess the resolution is probably 1280x1024.

Are the newer AMD chips a good choice now then? When I built my PC a few years ago (E6300), there wasn't anything offering the same performance or better in the same price bracket from AMD.

Could you explain the reasons/benefits of those choices please? I'm not likely to just jump straight in and buy something without a little bit of background knowledge.
