how do :)

I have ~£250 to spend on a new pc, not including monitor and mouse.
Granted, it's not much cash, but she won't be playing Crysis or anything.
General use, but with longevity in mind - I'm into my overclocking, so the E2140 is my best bet I reckon, need a gig of ram, and a cheap-o case - the rest of it, I'd like some ideas tho :)

Cheers!
Ian

Hey :-)

I haven't included you an optical drive in this spec although not sure if you need one. If you do then drop the 2GB of RAM and get 1GB. Although 2GB of RAM would be a nice boost as 1GB is a bit "meh". The board has onboard VGA as well and also onboard sound, and the case comes with a PSU... all in all should suit your needs. The hard drive I don't really like either as I don't like Maxtor, so if needed and you can afford it then maybe change the Maxtor for a Hitachi Deskstar which is a few quid extra.

Best I could do-it does come with an OS though, if you dont need that it comes pretty close to the budget, and has an OKish GPU

How about...

EDIT: Without OS comes to around £220 incl. VAT ;)

looks good!
I don't *need* an OS - I'm fairly sure that ubuntu/pclos would be fine for my gf, but I guess a win system would probably be easiest.
Does the mobo on the barebones give any headroom for overclocking at all?

*edit* took a look at the barebones - the 250W PSU might hinder some what, but I'm sure we've got a few PSU's lying around I could swap it out with :)

thanks for the help guys!

PSU shouldn't be a problem unless you add a (powerful) GFX etc. That said, the ones found in barebones are normally quite capable :)

Something around 250-350W should be ideal for that kind of spec. like hp says unless its got a graphics card and a powerful one at that it won't demand greater watts for the rails.

Brave man  Or she's tech savvy? Hardware/software compatibility could be another issue, e.g. iPod/iTunes, etc :)

EDIT: If you choose to drop the OS, go for this barebone instead. The G965 chipset is better ;)

My iPod has always worked fine with Amarok :)
She not that tech *un*savvy, and tbh ubuntu/pclos can be quite user freindly once they've been set up. I'll take a look at the G965 - I asume both barebones come with GMA900 grfx? If so, I may fork over for a HD2400 or something - I find the GMA900 to be as usefull as a fish for even the slightest 3D.
