Spec my new GPU :)

Well Mantle better give at least 5 fps minimum better performance or it'll be a complete failure and I guess that's better than nothing. If it was really that great they would have probably teased the performance improvement at least by now to mess with NVIDIA.

If AMD release Mantle with a driver update that optimises BF4 anyway it could be a bit shady as to how much is this mantle improving BF4 vs working with dice to optimise the game, so scratch that you probably want 10fps improvement minimum. More than 10fps could be interesting as we could see a 280X going over a 780.

As you can see though, there's no difference in noise between the MSI and Asus 280X and the 770s. The Gigabyte 280X is showing about twice the amount of noise as them in that review.

You could set up a new profile in Afterburner that limits the fan to 70% or something, but if temps are out of control it sounds like a faulty card.

I have a windforce 7950 and find it quite loud and in the wrong case setup gets very hot.

For some reason the windforce likes to blast the heat out towards the side window and if there is no where for the air to go it gets very hot.

I think a good side extractor fan is needed for the windforce.

You play right into AMDs hands like a little puppet.
AMD says Mantle, naive people jump onto it, even though there are no benchmarks and everything is speculation.

If you want AMD just say so... but to use Mantle as a reason.?.
Or do you know something no one else does?

Not really, but from some of the Developer video's its interesting technology and I've been a bit of an AMD fan for quite some time. I've had a AMD Generation card for the past ... 10 years? I think the last Nvidia card I owned was a 8800GTX :P

Perhaps I'm being a bit blithe with my choice because I've been out of the hardware scene for a couple of years now, hence asking for a little advice. I will consider any options - from some quick review benchmark research, I don't think a 280 card is going to give the improvement I'm looking for in terms of frame rates, and I'd have to stump up the cash for a 290 or go home.

It does seem a Nvidia 770 4GB card would give me what I want, at a slightly lower £250ish price point.

Hmmm, choices.

The thing is...even if we forget about Mantle, Nvidia still has not card that matches AMD's offering in terms of performance to price...

No card from Nvidia is actually worth considering until up to the GTX780 minimum.

wow ocuk are telling me I can not return the card under dsr because I used the bf4 code.......

WTF.... told them they can deduct the price of bf4 premium if they want...

if they still wont let me return it that is BS

That's the norm to be honest.

The 2 gfx cards I've bought recently that came with game codes had a warning regarding that. Think it was on the webpage after you clicked the link in the email.

I had no link in any email and no warning saying this on amds redeeming website.
it doesn't appear to say it on the ocuk website either

They will accept it minus the retail cost of BF4 (about £35). Once you add on that and the return postage it'd be more sensible maybe to update the BIOS to see if it fixes the issue first.

If the code is "part of the product", then of course you can't DSR the card if you've used the code...

but it's not part of the product or it would be listed as part of the box contents and included inside the card's box rather than bunged in the packaging box at the end..

anyway as I said I don't care about losing the cost of bf4 to get rid of a card that is stupidly loud.

Only choice is to RMA it.

I had planned to order the Gigabyte 280x today, but this thread has put me off a little now. I also noticed Gigabyte do a revision 2 now, what card have you got?

I've asked in the customer services section wether OC are stocking rev 1 or 2, but not had a reply yet :(

I thought the 770 vs 280x was not that much different if you dont think the 280x will give you the frame rate boost I doubt the 770 will.

I'm tempted to use caps...

Gigabyte has released a BIOS update for the 280X that reduces the fan speed.

The problem is the fan profile, not the GPU.

but it is 80c load with 100 % fan speed leaving less than 15c to play with and this is winter. (95c max temp)

which means I'm pretty much forced to under clock the card at some point if I can't return it.

OK OCUK want to charge me more than bf4 costs because I used the code...

me offering 33.99 wasn't enough
thank you for your webnote

if the game code has been used, there will be a charge of £40 plus VAT for the cost of the game deducted from the refund.

A 280x should double your fps I would have thought :

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/510?vs=618

( The 280x is basically an overclocked 7970 )

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_radeon_r9_280x_twinfrozr_gaming_oc_review,16.html

( a 7850 is the same perf-wise as your 6950 )

And as ratters said, there's nothing worth talking about between the 280x & 770 in fps speed.

I just got a his 280x today and it is very quiet :)

My gigabyte 7950 that runs on it's own in a different room is much louder than my HiS 280x and my Asus 7950 put together.
