Spec Ops The Line

Took a complete U Turn on this. Completed it on the weekend, the story is one of the best I've seen in a game! Totally didn't see it coming, WOW!!

As for the game play it's actually quite enjoyable. Yes it's samey at times but playing it on Hard really makes you work hard to conserve ammo and make every shot count.

Agreed.

Did not see that coming even from the demo.

So much better than I was expecting.

It's up there with Bioshock for playing with the gamer and concept of free will imo. It also sets out to critique the whole genre which is nice as the genre is always looking to stuff like 24 for story ideas so you just get endless restatements of the ticking timebomb scenario (e.g. everything you do is justified because the bad guys are really bad) and frankly it's a bit creepy.

Over on Kotaku (not a competitor, right?) they're reporting on the new MOH game having a promotional tie in with real life tactical gear and all the comments over there are very critical of this but people don't want to acknowledge that the game is basically about that.

Game itself... short and pretty irritating in places (PLAY TEST YOUR GAME IN RANDOM/REVERSE ORDER OR EVEN BETTER IN PARALLEL FOR ****S SAKE) but the storyline and what they achieve with it more than makes up for it.

yes VEGAS is the best game i've ever played for realistic guns

Vegas 2 has INTENTIONALLY UNREALISTIC guns.

They deliberately made them nothing like realistic and more like Michael Bay.

The only modern game that's even trying with gun and ballistics simulation is ArmA2. Anything Clancy is entirely horrible at this nowadays. Even the old games had pretty bad ballistics sim tbh.

What's this like? I would normally give it a miss based on some of the reviews but Yahtzee has recommended it surprisingly. Is the story really that good?

It's cheap on Steam now.

The story is excellent. So much so, that despite the game mechanics being a rather mediocre shooter at heart, I caned it over the space of a few days and I generally don't get much time these days to game.

In fact, I think the generic shooter gameplay may be somewhat intentional considering just what it does... "OK Mr. Gung-Ho, here's what ******* happens."

yes VEGAS is the best game i've ever played for realistic guns, the guns are flipping brilliant.

spec ops is 3rd person :(..... never good, Vegas is 1st

Are you thinking of R6 Raven Shield? I hope so. Even RS isn't that realistic, but 100x more so than vegas.

I just completed this, I enjoyed it mostly. There were quite a few badly placed checkpoints and getting into cover could be a pain sometimes and you could see the ending coming from a mile away, but I recommend it if you can get it cheap.

He said Vegas is the most realistic game he's played, big clue there.

As for Spec Ops, really didn't see a story this good coming tbh, even if you hate the gameplay it's worth playing through!

Played a couple of hours, felt pretty generic to me, story seemed decent though.

I wouldnt rate it as highly as some others do, but again, didnt finish the game so dont know whats so good about the story towards the end.

Overall I liked it.

Good story line, Gameplay was ok with a couple of good moral choices to be made

Come on admit it who mowed down the civilians after they hanged your man

Or massacred the soldiers at the end

:)

the next R6 Vegas is set in New York and looks pretty damn good !
Rainbow six Las Vegas is a boil on the behind of a once great tactical shooter series & personifies everything wrong with developers who destroy great games by making them into console cover shooters completely ignoring the elements of the series which made the games popular in the first place.

Oh & I don't think Tom Clancey's Rainbow Six Las Vegas 3 New York is a very catchy tittle either :P

Yeah :)

I think this game was made to be played as nasty as possible, which is refreshing, coming from Dishonored which I played high chaos but still stealthy. I was watching a friend play, he's doing it low chaos, and he seems to be getting more story and info for being the nice guy. Slightly disappointing but gives me an excuse to play through it again.

Just finished it.

Yeah, I mowed the ******* down after they killed Lugo, game did a fantastic job of playing with my emotions, and I was pretty damn angry when I saw him hanging there. Also felt like crap when I dropped the white phosphorus on the civilians.

Thinking of playing through it again, do you decisions affect the game in any major way?

Just finished this. Definitely well worth it for the price I got it at in the steam sale. Just to be clear though, I thought the gameplay was pretty mediocre for the most part, some pretty cool bits near the end though but the story was actually very good. I really enjoyed that especially the ending and also one of the other breaks from traditional FPSs. Not the sort of stuff you get in a normal FPS! Pretty interesting. And memorable.

Played this last night, how the hell is this getting so many good reviews? It's a generic 3rd person shooter, what's the USP?

edit: title should read The Line not Front Line

Did you complete it?

I thoroughly enjoyed the story line. I was so immersed in the gameplay, I completed the entire thing in one sitting! (Although it only took 6 hours of gametime, but still that's a lot of gaming for one day!)

it's supposed to be pretty good

It is :)

Just finished this today (took 3 nights, 8 hours in total). Just finishing a game in my Steam list is a personal triumph :p

But this was great from start to (just before) the finish. Sadly the ending was nonsensical and a bit of a let down.

But the gameplay, the setting, the music, the atmosphere... everything added up to a hell of a good experience. I'd say the story was "good" rather than amazing, but it's one of those games which is greater than the sum of its parts.

And like all the games I really enjoyed playing, I'm a little sad to have finished it :p

Overall, 9/10 from me.

I just finished this after a few months of on-and-off playing. It was a very generic 3rd Person Shooter, but I started to get in to the combat at the end. I really liked how Walker's voice changed at the end and he started swearing and sounded worn out.

I had trouble following the story at times, maybe because I kept taking long breaks between playing, but the ending was a bit rubbish. I was hoping for something smarter than that.

I thought Walker would end up killing Konrad and taking over having realised that his horrific actions were necessary. The whole Fight Club style "it was all in your head" thing was a poor resolution IMO.

I played this a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I don't play many 3rd person games, so if it's generic i wouldn't know.

I got it free with Bioshock Infinite, so was expecting it to be rubbish, but was very pleasantly surprised.
