I need a SFF computer as im new to building these things, and the gf needs to able to run photoshop, flash, and any video editing. I'd give it a budget of around 4-500 without monitor and needs to be pretty.
:P

Do your best guys!

what colour of case are you after? also what cpu make would you
like to go for? Intel or Amd.

are you after a mini tower case, cube case, or desktop case?
if you have any more options in your build please tell us.

i'd say something like a black or white colour for the case and prefer the cube to save a load of space :D

as for cpu, i'd prefer if it was Intel 775 chipset, enough for graphics work, and powerful enough to play games as a possible bonus :P

as for storage, hmm.. i'd say around 500gb would be enough, as budget is really limited.

I've tried working out a nice budget machine with the OCuk shopping cart, but it just ends up being really expensive :s

Shuttle XPC SG31G2 Aluminium Barebones System - Intel Core 2 Duo (LGA775) - Black £157.99
(£185.64) £157.99
(£185.64)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.99
(£58.74) £49.99
(£58.74)
Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ) £41.99
(£49.34) £41.99
(£49.34)
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK) £31.99
(£37.59) £31.99
(£37.59)
Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £13.99
(£16.44) £13.99
(£16.44)

Plenty spare to add a GPU and may be worth going for a quad core

wow, looks good at 347.75 minus delivery.

is there a huge performance gap between the E5200 and the E8400?

not a bad build there, just do some checking to see if the gfx card you go for fits and powers up,
as a lot of mid and high end cards dont work or fit in shuttles

hmm what about this build

As for a case you could go with a shuttle, or maybe a case like the

Silverstone Sugo SG01B Evolution
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...1B Evolution Aluminium Micro-ATX Case - Black

Lian-Li V350B Aluminium Mini-Tower
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...me=Lian-Li V350B Aluminium Mini-Tower - Black

both cases are out of stock to you will have to look else were to buy them.

both are nice cases. as for the gfx card ive picked might not work in a shuttle. but you could
change that for a lower end card if needed

yeah one thing im afraid of is the size of the graphics card being too long and not being able to fit :(

but i still want her to have a decent graphics card so she can join me on games :P

EDIT: looks like i'd have to hunt down a mATX motherboard too for those 2 cases, but they're pretty sweet looking :D

oh... so that'll go above budget :(

I still think the quad is a little bit pricey imo, as the new photoshop edition relies more on the GPU, so i'd stick to dual core.

hmm.. she plays MMO's and a load of puzzle games at the moment. Nothing really high spec'd, but hoping with the new computer she'll be playing something with a bit more graphical detail :P

oops oh yea forgot to add a mother board to the list

the Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R or the Asus P5E-VM HDMI Intel G35 are nice
boards, but if you not gonna OC the system any matx board should be ok

so yea a quadcore cpu will make the system set you back abit, dualcore should be fine
i use a dualcore amd cpu on my media pc. and im very happy with it.

my system specs are in my sig if you wonna look.

hmm im considering the build that jellybeard999 recommended but with a E8400, graphics card wise im still worried that it wont fit inside the shuttle :(

With Tosk's recommended build it goes over budget.. as i need to purchase the case, psu and motherboard.

you could use a cheaper board and gfx card, that will save you money

as for the shuttle build, you are limited on the power use and card size for the gfx card.
if you can find the right card for it, it will be a nice build.

i was thinking of putting maybe a 9600GT, but im not sure how power consuming these would be, also the length of the card may be an issue :(

9600gt cards aint that long so yea it would fit, but im not sure of the power usage
they take.

i have a thing with ATi cards.... i mean AMD, they never seem to live long with me.

but i'll go check this one out, if the price and power consumption fits.. i'll consider it...
