This may ramble on slightly.....

3 months ago I left the motor trade. After 6 years of driving some lovely company cars I decided to take another job.
I bought a Golf GT Sport Diesel when I left as I thought I would be doing a few miles and strangely I needed to prove I was financing a car to qualify for my car allowance.

I can honestly say that it is the most boring car I have ever driven! I am spending £250 a month on the finance and due to doing 500 miles a month I cant see the point in it.
I have the car up for sale and should make a small profit on it.

I want a 911 but cant insure it on my trade policy. I will buy one in August when my renewal is up and can change the terms.

Until then I would like something upto £5k max. I have no idea what I want I just want it to have some sort of stand out feature. (The golf is excellent at no one thing but competent at everything)
I have no idea what I want but would like something with a large petrol engine I think or maybe a hot hatch.
Fuel cost don't really matter as I will be doing about 8K a year.
I have thought of all sorts this morning I was looking at Jag S types and XJ's on Pistonheads ready to pick the phone up.
As I am only 28 I thought it might be time to ask here!

2 seats is fine. I do like coupe's and convertibles but Saloons are fine.
I know all the theory about how engines and stuff work but I have no practical knowledge really.

I have attached a link to cars which I am not allowed on my trade policy below.

Why dont you just alter the policy to cover the car you want?

Or insure it separately? I cant imagine why you want to go from a 20k car to a 5k one to save an insurance premium.

I cant alter the policy as the company wont insure me on any Porsche (even a Boxster) due to my age. I could get another policy to insure the 911 but I used my Motor trade no claims to start this policy (I buy and sell a few cars) A 28 year old male on a 911 without any no claims and a Liverpool city center postcode is eye watering on insurance as you would imagine.
My Golf was bought as I took it as a trade in when I was selling BMW's its an 08 plate and was bought for 12k.
I want to use the time until I can insure one to save up enough for a good facelift 996.

Basically at the moment I dont see the point financing a car which I simply dont like.
If I could spend less I would it seems to me that you can get a decent x-type 3.0 or S-type for about 3K! This just seems outrageous value to me.

Ok then what Jag do you fancy?

You wont get a decent S type for 3k, you want to be buying a 2002 car onwards.

sorry I edited the post above.

I don't know anything about Jags. Are they going to be a money pit? or can I reasonably expect to buy one with a large engine and spend not much more on it than routine maintenance costs for the next 9 months I have also thought about Mercs etc aswell.
I guess I just dont have any interest in anything at this end of the market so I havent a clue what to buy.
Ask me about Supercars or post 2005 BMW's and I could write a book!

With Jags its all about buying the right car first time round, if i were in your boat i would spend 5k on a very good XJ8 (X308 shape) which you wont then lose a penny on over the next 9 months.

Spend 3k and you will probably spend another 1500 quid getting the car right. Of course if you just want something to run into the ground for 9 months get a 3k Saab 9-5.

That looks like a lot of car for the money. The mileage is quite high. Are they good for it?
My Dad had a 9000CSE years ago and he loved it. I have no knowledge of the GM era cars though

Yea those miles are nothing, dont worry about the miles.

Its had an engine and box at 65k so you might be lucky.

I spent 7 months searching for my one of those and it was beautiful but iv still spent 2k on it getting it perfect, bear in mind mine dont even do 1000 miles a year.

The thing with the one you found is it wants a 200 quid gearbox fluid change straight away.

Then here are the things to check.

It needs the late type timing chain tensioners and guides/chains (1200 quid job)

Throttle body recall completed (1000 pound job)

Later type water pump and thermostat.

Suspension in good condition no knocks or groans a refresh is another grand.

See what im saying about these cars i love them but if you buy the wrong one its going to cost you.

If hes got a cheap traders policy altering it probably is expensive.

Yes maybe for the purposes I want it for it's not something I should go for.
Yours looks lovely though!

What about an X-type I know they have a certain stigma attached to them but they seem like a lot of car for the money to me. In fact values of all Jags seem on their arse.

You're 28. What kind of crap insurance company is this?

Its my first Insurance policy in 6 years so I had to take what I could get at the time.

It still cost £2300 to have me and my GF on there with a £15k value limit in any one car and the list of cars posted above not allowed!!!

Jags are funny cars, here is my other one

Iv been offered 7k for that twice because its perfect and low miles, you can get one that looks like it for 3k, but you get what you pay for, do you get what i mean.

X types are great value for money and strong you might get a good one for 3k or you might not, honestly for 3k buy a Saab 9-5.

Or sort out your insurance and get a 996, i know a bit about them too :)

I honestly cant tell you how much I want a 911! C2S please.

997 prices are getting into the realms I could afford aswell.

I also must be one of the only sane people that quite fancies a Targa aswell.
