hey guys

so after 2 years with this PC i am rebuilding,

requirements are:

Optimal for gaming
Streaming
Media recording over pci-e (already got the hardware)
Media editing and encoding

Currently i have:
i7 920
Asus p6t
6gb dominator
670 gtx (will probably keep this)
40gb intel ssd (needs upgrading)

Thats all the important stuff, so i need to upgrade from that to whatevers best at the moment.

Budget is around £1000 (can be over if necessary) and I want it to last me another 2 years so feel free to go overkill i dont like compromising on parts!

I use water cooling so need a smallish case (i have a CM cosmos and its massive) but still need to fit a dual rad in it somewhere (internal mounting)

I am keeping my pump so dont need one of them, and can i re use my i7 920 socket cpu block on the new processors?

I like to overclock so a decent board is a must (i was looking at a asus RoG board?)

Thanks for any tips, been out of the scene since my last build and want to build something super fast that will stand the tests of time!

whats haswell? last time i wanted to upgrade i was told to wait for ivybridge...if i spent all my time waiting for the next best thing id never do anything.

System is fine but im upgrading because an opportunity came up. besides, this case is to big so if i need to take everything out to downsize i may as well replace everything if i can afford it, saves my time.

3770 without K is useless... Either get 3770K or intel xeon 123v2... You dont even need i7 for gaming 3570k will do fine. Corsair enthusiast isnt worth it.. get XFX which would be cheaper and better since its modular and made by seasonic the biggest name in PSU world.

ok thanks, whats the difference with the K?

I want an i7 for my media encoding, my cpu maxes out as it is!

I went with corsair just as ive had them ever since ive been building pc's and want a modular one, last XFX product i bought was a gcard which broke...

also will my cpu water block on my i7 920 transfer over to the new board ok? or do i need a new water block / mounting bracket?

edit: you added a ram comment, its cheap so im just going to buy the max to have piece of mind, as long as its all within budget its not a concern!

K allows to overclock, the amount of people who have problems with Corsair PSU`s is ridicolous, check out youtube.. most of its though cosmetic like rattling of a fan.

ah right 100% want the K then, i just looked at the XFX reviews and theres one that says the exact same thing you just said so seems neither is ideal?

Ive been using corsair for around 8 years with zero problems...

any other parts of the build need modification? and have i missed any components?

Also anyone cable to help with the waterblock question?

Thanks for your time guys!

What block is it, if it didnt come with a backplate for socket 1155, you should be able to source one for it. Not sure on water block back plates, but a lot of air cooler brackets now have multiple mount holes on the one backplate.

I dont remember the socket now it was so long ago! its a i7 920 D0 whatever socket that was! pc was done 3 years ago

Any chance of a pic of the block, or a possibility that you may still have a receipt showing the details of the order. Id say sourcing a backplate for the block should be pretty easy if it's a well known model.

not easily, i can tell you its a EK Supreme Cu Block. nothing more than that

Your choice really, the silverstone does seem to be "fully modular" It is your choice, 850W is an overkill for 1 video card 500W will do.

i prefer more power to allow for upgrades, better more than run into issues! think ill go with the XFX as its a bit more power for the money.

Now that parts decided, any other bits worth looking into or is the rest fine?

I mean really you can go for this,

YOUR BASKET
1 x intel core i7-3930k 3.20ghz (sandybridge-e) socket lga2011 processor - retail £459.95
1 x gigabyte x79-ud3 intel x79 (socket 2011) ddr3 motherboard £164.99
1 x geil evo leggera 16gb (2x8gb) ddr3 pc3-14900c10 1866mhz dual channel kit (gel316gb1866c10dc) £79.99
total : £716.33 (includes shipping : £9.50).

it would be over a litle from your current setup by about 60 quid but that cpu will definetly make difference in encoding ect... it has 6 cores and 12 threads... you could use msi motherboard it has 8 ram slots instead of 4..

but i would do reading before buying since i am not familair with x79

1 x msi x79a-gd45 (8d) intel x79 (socket 2011) ddr3 motherboard £153.98

i can go a hundred over budget i think if it was for totally better tech, is that a good move then? i know nothing about the 6 core!

It wouldnt make a difference in gaming today thats why everyone picks up 3570K, since games barely can make use of 4 cores, editing and encoding should do.

yea im all about being future proof though, especially for only £60 or so, though those parts are so ugly and boring!

getting confused now!

i dont want to wait for new CPU's as ive done that before and ended up with nothing, in my general PC usage the biggest upgrade i ever made was hard drive to SSD so i care little about these new architectures.

Its simple really, going for 3770K wouldnt benefit you much at all... Especially with 340 quid motherboard, it would cost you fortune and make very little difference performance wise... 3930K setup price wise isnt far off of your 3770K setup, but should be much more powerful and future proof.

ok, random requirement but is there a good mobo with 2 ethernet ports?

Something like this work?

Its really out of my depth now, that mobo isnt ATX factor make sure its compatible with your case...

If you really want future proofness and money is no issue to you, cant go wrong with this

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA SR-X Dual Socket (Socket 2011) Motherboard £559.99
2 x Intel Xeon E5-2620W 2.00GHz (Socket 2011) - Retail £329.99 (£659.98)
Total : £1,231.37 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Btw it does have 2 ethernet ports :D

Not sure if cpu and mobo are compatible, do check if you decide to buy.

thats a little to much for me lol. im working on a setup now ill post in a sec!

Just wanted to see what you got, then I could tell you what a 3930K gets at stock and overclocked.

ah well just google the standard result for my processor, i dont have an overclock on it anymore since it made no difference. just a straight 2.4 (i think its .4) Ghz i7 920 D0
