Speccing a new rig

Ah, excellent. Thankyou all - especially you cinderz - for the advice.

I have final build now and will order on monday if all goes to plan. Will check then to capitalize on any deals which arise! I can only hope that the other components don't go up in price as well as the cpu.

Sirrah

I think this is pretty good - should run BF3 pretty nicely - though I have learned that you don't come to the ocUK forums to save money lol

Ah it's ok dude! Nice rig. Just wish I had the money for something like what you getting. I'll stick with my budget quad and gpu for now though.

Enjoy the rig, and wouldn't mind some pics when it's up and running xD

Hey guys, going to order the pc tomorrow - I have been pondering a few changes:

Your basket

MSI GeForce GTX 570 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **Supplied with FREE Batman: Arkham City PC game** £279.98

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail with FREE TrackMania 2 Canyon PC Game £241.99

Samsung B2430H 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black £167.99

MSI Z68A-GD65-G3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £144.00

Antec TruePower New Modular 750W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £85.99

Crucial RealSSD M4 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive £74.99

BitFenix Shinobi Gaming Windowed Case - Black £56.99

Samsung SH-B123L/BSBP 12x BluRay ROM / 16x DVD±RW Lightscribe SATA-II Optical Drive - Black (OEM) £49.99

Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache - OEM (WD10EARX) £46.99

Corsair Vengeance Blue 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £43.99

OcUK Value 300Mbps Wireless-N PCI Adapter £16.99

Total : £1,232.82

Summary of changes:

1. Changed the memory up to 8 gigs of the same kind, seemed a no brainer for the slight cost increase

2. Changed the i5 to the i7

3. Removed the cpu cooler (I assume it will come with a stock cooler) to bring the cost down. I simply cannot afford to have both, and as I know I am not going to overclock it until a fair few months down the line I would rather wait to get the cooler I really want.

Do you think these changes are a good idea compared to the previous build I have posted a few posts above? Someone said something of note in a thread I read which was: one can always add a cpu cooler later, but you cannot add hyperthreading to an i5 ever.

As BF3 is the first game, hopefully of many, to utilize this power I thought it might be a prudent investment. What do you guys think?

Edit: also, should I swap my motherboard out for one of the much touted Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3's? I don't really see a functional difference between the current one and that, except the price hike. Any guidance would be great!

2nd Edit: This is getting more and more confusing! I have just realised that if I keep the i5 2500K but put in a GTX 580 then the cost is practically the same. This is really difficult to decide.

On the decision for the cooler, the stock cooler with do you for now until you do overclock. Unless you can afford an extra £30 for the Gelid Tranquillo! Excellent cooler and will cool that i7 overclocked to hell!

If you do change your motherboard, for an extra £15 get the Asrock Z68 Extreme 4 Gen 3: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-051-AK&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1990

This board is a lot better than the MSI board you have at the moment. Read up on it in last months PC Format/Custom PC. Cannot remember which lol, but was in one of them, and it got great results. Far better than the MSI board you have at the moment.

If you take out the i7 for the i5 you will lose hyper-threading technology which is in the i7 only and not the i5, which battlefield 3 will use a lot of! If you want to get the best of out battlefield 3, keep the i7.

But if you take away the 570 for the 580, then you will get slightly getter framerates, and i mean an extra 10-15fps. Is it worth sacrificing the hyper threading of the i7 for and extra 10fps, but think about it, with hyper threading, you should be able to get them 10FPS back with the 570 as you have a faster cpu.

Stick with what you have and your good to go! i7 + 570 is a nice combination and will play battlefield 3 on high settings @ 1920*1080 very easily with AA on max. You should easily get around 60fps+ and I mean easily. When you get the rig, download the beta version of the game, or at least try bad company 2 on the highest settings, should give you a LITTLE feel on what it may react like!

And thanks for the "saying thank you" for the advice I have given you. Could you at least, click on "trust" in this post, so I can get some nice rep.

Thanks Dude

Anything else, either ask me here, or go to my profile and email me.

Enjoy the rig!

You will probably laugh your head off at this Cinderz, I couldn't make my mind up at all wrt to upgrading the gpu or the cpu so I'm going for both! This is really pushing my cash as far as it will go so I will have to wait a little while for a cpu cooler, but that is fine as I know I won't be oc'ing anyway.

Here is the final final final build which I am about to pull the trigger on, I just hope that everything will fit in the case, otherwise I am buggered! Take one last check for me and then that's it, I promise.

Also I will certainly press trust, you deserve it!

HA!

I will say this, that rig is going to be freakin' awesome and you went for the windowed version of the Shinboi! Good choice, the cooling on the standard version is a bit "meh" but with the windows version and the extra fan on the side, will improve the cooling dramatically. And that case... I'M GETTING ONE TOO!!!! I like the windowed version, so decided it is time to upgrade from my old ThermalTake V9:

Everything will fit inside the Shinboi including the GTX580. Nice case routing too.

Enjoy xD

Indeed I don't want to break any rules.

I'll give it a go over this evening.

Anyways, at least I am helping people out. That is main reason I am on here xD

Cheers for the heads up Deception
