Building a system for my uncle which has to be good at scanning at decent speeds, the spec, obviously, doesnt have to be amazing the scanner I am loooking at costs in the region of £475 for 25ppm either over USB2.0 or SCSI. (Fujitsu FI-5120C).
What I have ocme up with thus far:
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
£109.99
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1300 256MB DDR2 AVIVO TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) -
£39.99
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
£84.99
Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-4200C4 Dual Channel Kit (CT2KIT12864AA53E)
£134.99
2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
£93.98
Liteon DVD-8900 16x DVD±RW/RAM (Black) - OEM
£15.99
Thermaltake VB1000BNS Soprano SuperMidi Tower - Black
£41.99
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition inc. SP2 - OEM - 1Pk (E85-04026)
£82.99
Enermax Noisetaker 485W EG495AX-VE(G) SFMA ATX2.0 PSU
£51.99
Sub Total : £656.90
The plan is to run the 250GBers in Raid 0, the rest of the hardware is pretty low end, it needs to be quick enough to scan at the scanners full potential and obviously do any post-processing at a decent speed. I think with the c2d, the Raid 1 on the drives and 2gb of ram this should be more than sufficient.
I am in 2 minds whether or not to get a SCSI card or not. It should provide a significant speed boost over USB2.0 but a controller card is going to push the price a fair amount, £140 for the entry level card on OCUK.
I was actually thinking about dumping it all in a shuttle as opposed to a full system
Any comments or advice?
