Spec'ing a High end PC - advice please!

Lol, more decisions! I really wanted 32Gb of memory which is expensive if I have to use the Samsung memory, which coolers would work with my existing spec memory or similar?

Alpenfohn will send you a 2011 mounting kit for free.
They'll both perform about the same. I'd go with the K2 simply because it's better looking. Actually, I already did :D

Looks like the X79 2011 platform would add to the build cost so I need to weigh up the benefits over losing certain other features :-)

Looking to make a decision between 2011 and 1155 now so I can finalize a spec :-)

Still wondering if putting a SATA drive in for storage is a bit of a bottleneck, noisy, hot and slow? Wondered about putting another SSD in for storage instead?

as sata are only storage, so access isn't all the time, tbh it won't matter, if apps or something of everyday use was on it yes, it would be the slowest part of the system etc

thats why most put storage outside the case, as its not needed all the time, but inside wouldn't matter either.

if you do find they are the bottleneck in your supper fast system, for little cost those caching drives are ment for standard hdd's and will help :)

your cpu will fly, enjoy your build and give us some feed back on how your getting on with it ie build and use etc, photo's are always nice and benchmark it when it's up and running

Many thanks :-) Will post back and no doubt be asking a few questions, building isn't a major worry I just want to get the most out of it with regards to tweaking, bios etc.
Can I install Win7 straight onto an SSD nowadays?

I did wonder about 16Gb faster RAM vs 32Gb slower, came to the conclusion that 32Gb slower would be better......I see you've put 2 dual channel kits in there, would these run as a quad kit? As one of the benefits of buying a 2011 platform is quad I think that would be better.

Same difference mate. I spec'd two dual channel kits so you get X4 8GB RAM modules which is 32GB same as you get ordering the quad kit. You can OC the RAM btw (review of the mamba kit). I wouldn't pay anymore fella for the kingston.

Used a bigger IPS panel too with more connections for the same price as your choice. The 660Ti is a cut down 670, should be able to overclock that MSI Frozr IV nicely, improves CUDA and gaming performance. The silver arrow is also cheaper than the Mount Doom and is excellent

Just found Kingston Hyper X 32GB 2400MHz DDR3 CL11 DIMM (Kit of 4) XMP Beast Series for £230 which looks like a decent deal. These have taller heat spreaders so I'm wondering about clearance.

Hono, you reckon the Ti would offer anything useful over a std 660 for photo/video work?
I'm wondering if either are necessary considering he doesn't want it for gaming tbh...

He'd also have to raise the front fan slightly on the SB-E which may cause slight issues in the R4. May not, but it will be tight.

Yes he did say no gaming and then said actually he might. The 660 is just so meh for it's price and is not really related to the 660Ti which is closer to the 670. I'm just discussing the options to help him balance the build himself.

P.S He was willing to spend more on the RAM, I edited in a review of the Mamba RAM which they OC'd to 2400mhz. So I saved him cash on the RAM that can go into the GPU budget if he wanted. He is spending a lot of poppy so I know he will consider his options well.

Lol, I think as I'm heading down the 2011 platform we can say no to games, as I said earlier in the thread, I wouldn't mind being able to play games somewhere down the line (or rather my son probably would!) but I could always add a good graphics card further down the line.

So would I be better getting a 1Gb graphics card with the same support or keep with the 660?

more for the card the better for most, but not needed for now

2gb min now days for most, some like 3 plus, but until you game i wouldn't bother too much with what you have got already will be fine
