Specs Needed

Hi,

Can you do me two specs for a mate.

1) As cheap as possible:

X2 processor + HSF
Mobo (That can take an X2 and AGP GFX)
2GB Ram
Case
HDD
DVD RW

2) Mid-range spec:

X2 processor + HSF
Mobo
PCI-E GFX Card (Best bang for buck)
2GB Ram
Case
HDD
DVD RW

I have to admit I've been out of the loop a bit for the last 2 years on the hardware front. The last time I knew what I was talking about hardware-wise people were buying 2500 Bartons and 9800 AIWs

939 has just ceased production by AMD, so is a legacy format. AM2 is the new platform, and AMD will be releasing new processors on this platform (at least for as long as any one platform lasts).

The major difference at the moment in practical terms is that AM2 uses DDR2 RAM (as opposed to 939, which uses the slower DDR). Apart from that, prices are roughly comparable - though some bargains can be found for 939 as it is being discontinued

Ok, well sounds like it will have to be 939 for spec(1) and AM2 for spec(2) then.

spec 1 isn't possible on that budget using all new parts. You are going to have to source second-hand components or compromise on part of the spec (getting the A64 3700+ chip should be a nice system that would come in within budget)
