Specsavers - will they exaggerate the need for a pair for specs?

In Scotland all eye tests are paid for by the Scottish Government.

I had one a few months ago, the only time I've had my eyes tested properly in 26 years, my eyes are fine and neither did they try to fake it.

After all, I know if I can see his charts or not. ;)

used to do admin work for a specsavers store, and in short the answer is yes, in the weekly meetings the directors would push everyone to try get everyone who needed glasses to buy 2 pairs.
was a joke in the end because staff would then be pushing elderly to buy glasses they didn't really need. abd the prices were ridiculous, the designer glasses which people spend hundreds on literally cost the company about 10% of what they charged for them.

Eye exams are free here... and i have never been fleeced into buying a pair of glasses :)

I dont need, so they dont offer.

I think it would be pretty bad if they misprescribed you a pair that you didnt need and it done bad over the years... i doubt they would do that!

You never know tho! :P

I had my eyetest at the Specsavers and the results indicated I was slightly short sighted and for things like driving I would need glasses. When the glasses arrived I tried them on and complained that I couldn't read with them like I could my previous set. The optician whent on to say that I didn't need glasses for reading to my amazement, as previous opticians had provided me prescriptions for both. He then went on to say that he could do me a third pair for reading if I wished :confused: so I suppose this answers the original OP's question.

It's not about "can you read the chart or not". It's to what extent you can read it. Even people with 20:20 vision can't read the bottom lines by design I didn't think?

As for spec savers, I've personally had good and bad service from them, but more bad than good. I quit using them a year ago and now buy my contacts direct from a cheaper online place which doesn't even require proof of my perscription. They come within a couple of days and are much cheaper than specsavers. As for when I need another eye test and glasses, I will be going elsewhere.

I've never had a problem with Specsavers. Never been coerced into buying anything at all. My last pair of glasses were £25 cheaper than my first pair, designer brand and were buy one get one free. Only took a week to get em, too.

Surely this "buy 1 get 1 free" nonsense is just a sales strategy to get you to actually buy two pairs and think your paying for one? :p
Remember it just dosent make sense in business terms to give you a pair of free glasses, think about it.

I've been to Specsavers 4 times in 4 years and they tell me I'm on the border and don't need them.
I buy £3 specs from Tesco instead.

What? It's buy one get one free, how could that involve buying more than one pair?

I would know, I bought a pair from them, you know what happened? I got another pair. For free.

Unless they mace you before your eye test i don't see how they're going to swindle you :p

So you don't need glasses.

Yet you buy them anyway?

the cheap magnification ones you can get in supermarkets are good if you're eyes are just on the edge/old age type stuff, just makes things easier to read ithout having to spend £60+

They charged you twice as much for the first pair :p why on earth would they give you a free pair of glasses, they would go out of business in no time.
Its like the Domino pizza bogof deal and also they annoying safestyle uk, you actually think safestyle give you free windows aswell ? :p

unless their mark-up was already over 50% and this helped get busines.

or if they are currently engaged in some sort of attempt to drive a competitor out of business. (like walmart moving to an area and selling products and massively reduced process till competition shuts down then raising them to their normal levels.)
