In before 'just don't speed'.

What is the best type of speed camera detector/detection system? I have a Snooper S3 with the radar add on (that hasn't been updated/used for yonks), a Garmin Nuvi 310 satnav (map last updated about 24 months ago) and an HTC Desire phone. Which of these would be best for camera detection?

The Snooper has to be updated by Snooper @ £30 per year - the Nuvi can use the Pocket GPS database/poi thingies at £20 per year. I haven't really looked into the phone options yet, although I have downloaded Trapster, but haven't tried it out.

Which would be the best option and why? Many thanks :)

There isn't one single system.

look at what the cannonball / gumball guys use. They have a combination of laser / radar detectors (not to mention illegal jammers for both) along with GPS based databases on their sat navs.

There's loads of info on

I don't like them. None of them is infallible, but having one can lead you into a false sense of security and stop you keeping a lookout. Unless they ever stop painting them orange I'm sticking with the Mk 1 eyeball.

Pretty much what's been said above really. I'm told that an updated satnav with the pocketgpsworld database, plus a smartphone running trapster, plus a valentine one or beltronics rx65, plus a blinder m57 or similar is a very effective combination, but that's a lot of expense and effort and in the case of the last device you'll be in a lot of trouble if caught using it.

CamerAlert for Android/Apple is excellent. I used it on a recent trip to Belgium and it picked up many, many cameras which my in-car SmartNav (which is supposedly up to date) and Navigon sat nav didn't. Also, it alerts to high risk areas where mobile cameras are known to be used and users can report places where they've been seen.

The only slightly annoying thing I've noticed is that when paired via Bluetooth with my car and when the iPhone is in standby mode it will not give audible alerts via bluetooth, so you need to prevent the phone from entering standby which drains the battery.

Totally useless systems, half the static cameras aren't in use any more, and only a jammer will help against a mobile trap.
My silver colt had a radar jammer fitted, certainly worked for the flashing signs but that's the only time I dared switch it on. I'm led to believe they will get very angry if they catch you using one.

Also a specs system that hasn't worked for years became active recently around here

Basically you have to just stick to the speed limit

I use Sygic sat nav on my phone. It has speed camera and traffic light camera alerts. No annual sub and free updates once it bought. You can just switch it on, no need to plot a route for it to work. Monitors your speed too and will alert you if you are speeding.

I use mine as a reminder to slow down / keep my speed down. It works - as I've set it to alert me if I creep over the limit too much. However, it's because I've had it for years, I wouldn't bother with a new one now.
