Hi All,

I have changed jobs which means driving in northamptonshire and cambridgeshire which apart from the very main roads I do not know the area.

touching wood i have been driving for 10 years with no points, and while i generally do not speed I dont want to get caught now.

So im looking at buying a camera detector or warning thingy such as a road angel?

only thing is im woefully out of date with such things, can anybody recomend anything at all? even if its somthing i would need to buy used (cheaper is nicer for me lol )

many thanks

Ross

I only really know about the Road Angel gem or the like and they aren't that cheap with the yearly subscriptions with some people say the unit itself feels really cheap. The best of the lot is the PogoAlert but that is about £250 just for the unit with subs on top of that.

I just bought a radar/laser detector off eBay. - It won't tell you about the average speed cameras, and the reality is that if you get a long hard ping it's too late... but it's cheap and has no subscriptions; plus it will warn you about mobile cameras if they've just pinged someone nearby.

The downside is that it will read all sorts of things as a radar ping; the biggest problem being traffic lights as you drive through town.

It does also seem to recognise emergency services, so you get a ping before you see an ambulance or whatever (which might mean you're expecting something around the corner and avoid joining the crash).

I should add that this isn't a license for me to speed; it's more a way of reminding me to check that the speed I'm doing is within the limit. - It didn't stop me getting done for 40 in a 30 zone because that's what I thought the limit was.

Dont speed, it's cheaper.

yep, and your spot on I agree. however with the most daft placement of cameras trying to catch you out, taking your eye of the ball for a split second could cause you 3 points and a fine.

I would rather be warned I am infact speeding more than anything as we are not perfect and often can make a small mistake

I think the radar/laser detector is ok for the long open road which don't have any traffic lights or anything, so if it goes off you know theres a good reason. Plus they're cheap :)

A decent satnav will surely indicate what the maximum speed you should be doing?

Trapster on your smartphone.

Buy a cradle and car phone charger, job done.

Oh... did I mention the app is free and updated constantly by users etc, even mobile police traps.

I got the v4 here, though the k1 is nice too, comes with life time subscription, just stick it on the car and forget about it.

Gives fixed points, average zones, black spots, traffic lights and more, customisable too.

Easily worth the one off £15-£20 payment, no silly subscriptions

I have an older origin b2. It is old, but you know what? It's great. I seldom go over the speed limit (unless I'm overtaking or need to) as on the motorway I just stick CC on.

However, it IS useful at telling you that there's a speed camera, and that's important. Why? Because lots of people slam on the brakes before a speed camera, and knowing when there is one coming up means that you can be aware of cars ahead perhaps acting erratically (okay you should be driving far enough away for that not to be an issue but circumstance change or happen). Furthermore, it means you can concentrate on driving and looking around you - if you do inadvertently drift a few mph over the speed limit, you'll be able to slow down without having to worry about checking your speedometer vociferously every 5s.

Now, I accept that with over a dozen years of driving one would be fairly good at gauging their speed without the need for a detector. And of course, some use it as tool to drive as fast as possible in between cameras. However, for most sensible drivers, they're just a good reminder tool that you're either going a little too fast, or that there's a blackspot ahead, or keeping you at the right speed in SPECs areas.

I don't see them as evil, they're a driving aid, just like sat nav is.

We're all car enthusiasts here (Well generally), so I'm sure no one is going to berate you about going a few miles over the limit - or even lots. It really doesn't bother me, as long as the conditions and the situation is safe to do so. i.e. not in front of a school at peak end of school time ;)

I got an email from Origin saying they had been bought by Road Angel. I had a b2 which was great but stopped using it when I replaced it with a say nav. B2 far better for speed camera location accuracy. Where this merger leaves the Pogo now is a big question. I was thinking of "upgrading" to a Pogo but not sure now.

can you turn them down sound wise so it just becomes visual?

this looks very simple, ideal
