Speed Camera Guy

FWIW, I was very generously given 3 points after being pinged by a PC with a hand-held speed gun on a bypass (he was on a footbridge). I wasn't stopped at the time - the NIP came through the post.

Most traffic enforcement officers won't batter an eye lid until your 10% + 2mph over the speed limit and even then its selective on who they will target.

More likely to go for the chav in a saxo than the businessman in Jag XF. Despite the latter being able to afford it easily and the former probably claiming dole money every fortnight.

Yeah I do believe they have no choice but to pull you over to ticket you if they used a speed gun. I saw them lurking in a layby when it was too late, and shortly after that had an unmarked car with its lights blaring away behind me.

a police officer with a speed gun doesn't have to pull the car over to prosecute the driver. It can be done purely off the registration mark using s172 of the road traffic act.
That being said however, most coppers wouldn't go to the time and effort of doing that when it would be easier to go after the vehicle and pull it. So in this case I don't think you have too much to worry about this time.

Sad to say but I may have been caught today. Would be my first speeding offence if it comes through. I was in a 30, came off the dual carriageway slip road thinking it was a 40 (turned out it's a 30), it then goes into a 30.

As I joined the main road from the slip, at the top of the slip, I saw the policeman with the speedgun, another policeman next to him, their car parked in the corner barely visable and I think two other coppers on the footpath. I didn't brake harshly but I did tap my brakes and after that I was not near 30 but above it by around a few mph. I passed them but no-one followed. I then proceeded to turn around and see what their line of sight may have been, and if the gun could point down the slip road. Turned out they were catching people off the flyover/slip, but they couldn't see down the slip unless they were further down the road. By the time I got there they were gone.

I will have to wait and see. :(

Don't worry about it - they'd have pulled you if they wanted you. It's only really vans you need to worry about for several weeks after.

I hope you are right Fox. I'm sure they can issue a NIP by post?

Sorry to bump this but I have been told different by some and others are saying I am likely to get a NIP by post. I could do with out points as I have a clean licence. Anyone else been in a similar situation?

If the Officer sees you speeding with an approved speed recording device, they could send you a NIP in the post and issue a summons, but that's not normal procedure.

You should be fine.

They can but they almost never do - generally speaking the operation you saw is designed to pull cars over and speak to them at the roadside. Proper police have better things to do than just sit there and take photos, that can left to civilians in scamera vans.

Practically there is nothing you can do but wait. It's up to you who you chose to believe if you have been offered contradictory advice.

I see. Thanks for the responses. I'll wait it out, I'm glad it occurred as its made more vary about roads and signs. Something which starts to lack after you pass your test and gain bad Habbits.

Really appreciate the replies.

Just thought I'd update on this. It's been a while now, and I have had no letter. I think I was lucky and got away with it.

There is something I saw however a few days ago, on that same stretch of road. People were getting pulled by the same TC's with speed guns, so Fox I have to say you were right. They pull you there and then.
