Hey guys,

Driving back down to Newcastle last evening and a speed camera flashed as I was going towards it (a1 near Berwick) and I was just wondering the legalities of this? I was under the impression that the gusto (thinks that's them) can only flash the other way?

Cheers guys.

thats a 60mph road mate. Near haggerston castle?

Yeah I know mate, which is why I wanted to know if I should be expecting 3points from a camera flashing the front of my car as I always thought it needed to be from the rear unless it was one of those weird looking cameras.

I know there was a time that GATSOs were not type approved for face-on traffic. No idea if this has changed in recent years or not.

Couple or gatsos in my area face towards the driver, I think they can work whichever way they want. It is also how they get pics of the driver as well. Sorry man.

You might get a speed awareness course, seeing as you were probably under 10% above the limit. Possibly.

Well, you do for something like 34 in a 30, so percentage wide it's the same...

Time for cloned plates.

lol. (just kidding), but its not hard to see why so many people are going down this road.

The whole speed camera thing is a joke, and stinks in my book.

If its a camera facing the other way (as in, to check traffic on that side) then you'll be fine. There is one on my A3 run home from work that faces the driver on purpose though, but its only in testing.

I've seen cameras flash hundreds of times for people on the opposite side of the road, for me too sometimes. Once a camera flashed as I was going through it but it was triggered by a guy on the other side of the road going towards the camera. Never had anything through and it's never one of the newer small gatsos that do it, only the old big ones.

I've set off two speed cameras that were facing me to cover the other side of the road and have heard nothing from either.

Whether the camera was front facing to cover your side of the road is a different question however...

Set a couple of GATSOs off front facing coming back down the A68 from Scotland about a month ago, single flash, never heard a thing. I'd suspect you're safe :)

Have they been switched off at all? A lot of Hampshire cameras are off (where I live)

if it was 70 on the clocks, it would be around 65ish depending on the car, so not too bad

If it was a gatso then it won't cause any issues - I've set them off many times driving towards them, it will have only flashed once instead of twice. They're not designed to prosecute drivers driving towards them.

A truvelo on the other hand are designed to record you when driving towards them - but don't really "flash".

Front facing cameras are front facng so the picture includes the driver ;)

Yeah but so what?

Are you suggesting the DVLA have a Face matching System whereby it cross references the face on camera to the faces on peoples licences?

I'd be struggling to believe they could do anything tbh, otherwise how come so many people just clone a plate and drive into the London Congestion zone.

Perhaps you may have a better idea than than me, as from what I have gathered from reading various posts on the forums you have some sort of involvement with the police.
