Speed issues

Hi all,

I have an 840 Pro 256GB in my computer, and a 1TB WD Black drive. I have my storage configured in the generic programs and OS on SSD, with files and everything else on the HDD.

However, a couple of weeks ago I wiped my SSD and reinstalled everything because I was getting anomalous boot times: 45-50 seconds. Once I had reinstalled everything, the speed was back to around 8-15 seconds. Though...when I plugged my HDD back into the SATA III (I am using the Intel set in this case on an X79 Deluxe) the speed just dropped massively.

Could the HDD be having an effect on the performance of my computer, namely at boots? (Yes I DO have indexing turned ON as I use search function a lot)

I do a fair bit of photo collation and Lightroom style editing, so I was intending to get another SSD anyway to fix the read and write latency in Lightroom and such, as well as to counter the annoying sound of the HDD. Would replacing my HDD with a 500GB EVO or something make a difference overall?

Thanks in advance,

Jack

And as a secondary thought, would partitioning my SSD, say into Steam, OS, Lightroom and other programs make a difference to performance?

I can't imagine that partioning your SSD would influence it's performance.

Check the health of your harddrive, in particular to it's S.M.A.R.T. data, with something like Hard Disk Sentinel.

I ran that program, 100% for both of the categories, not sure how to interpret the S.M.A.R.T data though...

Is my best solution here to simply go SSD for main storage, use the HDD as an archive drive for photos, Steam backups and movies, but have it configured for only turning on whilst in use?
