Hi all,

wife has an Acer Aspire 3 (A315-23)
https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/model/NX.HVTEK.00D

it's damned slow! barely does normal office tasks which is all it's used for.

Will a ram upgrade do the trick or is it just ****?

it's 8gb RAM, we thought putting another 8GB in there should help it do it's job

if this is the case, can anyone recommend an 8gb card - or do we need to buy 16gb and bin the existing 8GB?

Is it already using an SSD? Judging from upgrade suggestions it seems to be already using an m.2 NVMe SSD but it may be a slow model.

Searching up pictures of the laptop there's only 1 RAM slot so you can't upgrade it to dual channel. While jumping to 16gb could help, I don't see it significantly improving things.

yeah it's SSD but everything seems to just take so long to do, boot up isn't bad but any applications seems to kill the CPU and RAM if I watch task manager.

hmmm... so 16gb in one card is the only option. I agree might not help, but all in the right direction hopefully. We just moved so can't find the box so sending it back is out sadly.

The problem is the CPU has 2 cores and 4 threads. Don't spend any money upgrading this laptop as it won't make the slightest difference.

It's new laptop time, 4 cores 8 threads minimum, 16 gb ram minimum.

that's crazy, it's brand new! how can a brand new laptop be this bad that's madness
It's a problem with cheap laptops. You get affordable and then you get cut down to absolutely bare basics and it's not good enough for modern apps.

upgrading to 16gigs will help if the system is running out of memory when in use. The system will page the data in memory to the C drive and it'll be massively slowed down. Had it recently with the inlaws laptop.

I'd also suggest looking at the task manager to see how much memory is being used and which apps are being greedy. I'm sure you'll find that the bloatware that comes with the system pre-installed is using up a good amount of RAM. Uninstall as many as you can and see if that helps.
