Had a week away in Europe a week or so ago, and got flashed by a speed camera on a French motorway. No excuses really was going quicker than I should have, never been caught speeding in the UK or got any points on my license.

What are the chances I'm going to get a letter through the door? I've done some google searching but I can't seem to find anything solid.

I can't remember my exact speed but I would say I was doing a fair bit over the limit, also another british car behind me got flashed also!

If it's likely I will get a fine, how does the points system work? Am I likely to get points on my license for a speeding offence abroad?

Thanks in advance!

Id assume some sort of EU law will apply.

How will it work?
The proposals would enable EU drivers to be identified and thus prosecuted for offences committed in a Member State other than then one where their car is registered. In practical terms, the new rules will give Member States mutual access to each others' vehicle registration data via an electronic data exchange network to be put in place. This will allow for the exchange of the necessary data between the country in which the offence was committed and the country in which the car was registered. Once the owner's name and address are known, an offence notification, for which a model is established by the proposed directive, will be sent to him/her.
It will be for the Member State of offence (where the offence was committed) to decide on the follow up for the traffic offence. The directive does not harmonise either the nature of the offence nor the penalties for the offence. So it is the national rules in the Member State of offence, according to national law, which will continue to apply regarding both the nature of the offence and penalties.

it may have been updated since then.

If you get anything it will most likely be a fine, not sure they can impose points? Don't be surprised if it doesn't come through for months though.

Currently there are no laws in place which allow a foreigner caught on an unmanned camera to have points or a fine applied so don't worry about it.

Being stopped by a policeman is totally different and fines and temporary bans can be applied.

I got about 3 bans worth from my last drive to Spain if they do catch up with me, dont worry about it.

A few weeks ago I got a letter through the post for the previous owner of my house. I opened it in error as we've been here for years and I simply didn't look at the name on it. He was fined something like 180 euros for driving in Italy back in September. So it does seem to take a while for the fine to come through.

Wow, how can you get fined for driving in Italy? He must be a really really bad driver  I didn't even think they cared much about speed limits.

IIRC, for the forseeable future, unless they catch you whilst your there, theres nack all they can do.
Although ive heard that sometime in the next few years, they are meant to be linking all the camera/fines systems in Europe together, so they can do something about it...

I got a fine for driving through a restricted zone in Pisa, Italy. It was my fault, I should have been concentrating more on the road signs than trusting the bloody TomTom! The fine came through 11 months later - cost me £148!!

Must be an Italy thing, as a few years ago i 'sped' down a French motorway and still haven't had nout off them...

ditto been flashed by a road side cam a couple of years ago. heard nothing from it.

also was stopped by the spanish police at a speed trap, block pulled us all over, we were at the back of the line , an officer for every car, took one look at us, (typical english, car full of kids and camping stuff) looked like to much work for him and then he waved us off .LOL

bullit

I remember getting flashed by the same camera 2 times on the main road into andorra doing about 120mph to 130mph in a 50kmh zone and never heard nothing..
And me & my mate been flashed by loads of cameras in france and never heard anything..

(Now i wrote this i most likely get a pile of speed camera letters come through the letter box )

So you were doing 120-130mph in a ~30mph zone?

Theres roads like that in Spain, your going past houses but 2 seconds before you were at the national speed limit.

You should have seen me towing my boat in a Cayenne turbo, i'l show you how to tow a boat at 100mph :D
