Hi, got a bit of a dilemma and wondering if you guys can offer advice.

I received a fixed penalty notice for speeding dated 13/5/09. I'm going to send my documents and payment details off to to fixed penalty office, and i need to do this within 28 days. However, I have a car rental booked as part of my holiday starting 10/6/09 and need to produce my driving license then to actually take the rental.

- Does anyone know how long it takes them to return your paperwork once they have endorsed it with the points? Assuming i post it all off first thing tomorrow

- Any suggestions on how i might be able to get round the potential problem of not having my paperwork when i need to rent a car on 10/6/09?

for car rental they'd probably settle for just paper, as it's in America and they needn't know i have a card i guess

edit: perhaps a decent colour photo copy of the counterpart would suffice? :)

i'm definitely going to call them in the morning and ask how long they expect. do you know if they do any sped up service? Or is there any chance of going to their office (which is only about 45 mins away from me) to collect if it gets near to my date of 10/6/09?

For rental with 2 companies (1 was part of ford dealer and other enterprise) both phoned up to check my license rather than me show mine (for certain reasons)

or ignore that didnt realise was in US

You can ask for an extension if you want the photo.

Also if you are really worried you could pay £20 and get a new license delivered within 3 days if it is not returned in time.

For me it took about 7 days.

ah ok, so if it starts getting close i can contact the DVLA and ask for a new cop of the license? would that come with the points endorsed on it though, or would i get my current one back soon after and have 2 different versions of the counterpart bit?

guess it's an option if it looks like it is cutting it fine. would i just contact DVLA for a new copy of license saying i had lost my original? would they not know it had been sent off for points?

I guess it would depend if it your license had been endorsed yet. I lost mine when I got a speeding fine and was worried. but after asking on here phoned up and for £20 will be with you in three days.

I just had to go into my nearest court office to pay it.
Mind you there was a mix up after with them saying i handed over the wrong issue. which i never. Took about a month to get back.

North of scotland im located.

Can you just send all the details you need to send and forget to sign it. By the time they reply and give you a few more weeks would that give you enough time.

Was it a NIP you received or a NIP + Conditional Offer? If it's the former then you don't have to send the licence at this stage.

Do you have the option to pay in person as the court?

Have you tried ringing the safety camera partnership and asking if they can "suspend" the offence for a bit? They can normally suspend it for 14 days given a decent enough reason, which will be enough time to get your car, and then you can post off the paperwork.

no mention on the forms of being able to pay at the court. I'll ring them this am and ask them their advice....if they can suspend it for a bit, that might sort the issue out and i can post it all off once i get back

are you saying call up and get a replacement copy so i have a "backup" and then send off my normal one to get the points added. that way if it's not back in time i still have the replacement?

thanks to those who have provided advice here. i phoned them this morning and they told me if i posted normal post, it would typically take 2.5 weeks or so. if i send it recorded delivery, they normally return (by rec del too) within 2 days. sounds good :) got a colour photo copy in case

I think you may have misinterpreted what they said there.

Standard practice is that if you include a pre-paid recorded or special delivery envelope with your licence then they will use that to return it to you, not that they will send it back recorded if they received it recorded. That would cost them money!

i did ask for clarification and she said if i post it recorded, they would return recorded....but yeah, know what you mean. might call again to clarify before i send it off

and was caught doing a massive 36 mph in a 30 :(

tell the dvla you've lost your license, and pay for a new one. take your "lost" one with you if it doesnt come back in time ;) sorted.
