Speeding fines going up in April

Yea they have to be stopped by the police themselves. But it does happen. If your nailing it through a quiet village way over the limit and there happens to be a police car doing speed checks there (proper police, not just one of those vans), you'll get done.

I know a few people who have also been fined for riding without lights and a bell in Cambridge, where they are quite hot on these things.

I don't understand the EVO article? Using the examples they have given - when would you be eligible for the standard 3points/£100?

Sigh, even though cars have got safer, able to brake quicker and pedestrian safety has increased dramatically - they want to increase the fines for speeding. I'm all for the increase in fines/points for the mobile phone use, but that doesn't bring in money anywhere *near* as quickly and efficiently as a camera van picking people off at 400m with hardly any overhead costs.

The other day I was reading an FOI request for how many people had been caught by each speed camera site in the county I live. The numbers have dropped hugely over the past three years and I can only assume this will be mirrored in the other counties also - so revenue is dropping.

On one camera site, they've just installed SPECS average cameras and it started off at over a 1000 people a month caught and has been declining rapidly until it was down to just 195 in January 2017.

At another site on the A12 - annually they were catching between 1700-3500 people a year, until 2016 when they caught 900 and are set to only catch about 1400 this year.

On another site they caught 11,000 in total in 2016. For the month of January 2017 - they caught only 200 people meaning ~2400 annually.

As I said - a massive decline and they're losing a lot of revenue.

Cyclists can be fined for speeding. They also get points on their licence if they have one. The same rules apply to court summons if your X amount over the limit as well :)

The limits apply to "all traffic".

That's a myth, not true at all concerning points. You can be done for speeding on a bike if you are being unsafe but generally speeding limits don't apply to bicycles

But people have been fined and taken to court for it. But usually while undertaking at the same time.

I'm not concerned, it's dead easy to avoid getting a speeding fine.

I don't even get how people get caught.

Police cars/vans facing oncoming traffic around a bend is the only scenario I think you can get caught if you are actually aware of your surroundings.

As I said, you can be done for speeding on a bicycle, it comes under the charge of cycling furiously but you have to be riding fast irresponsibly. Speeding itself is not an offence like it is in a motor vehicle. The points on your licence for speeding on a bicycle is a load of guff.

How do cyclists know if they are speeding? It's not mandatory to have a working speedometer, unlike a motor vehicle.
