Speeding past a police car passing in the opposite direction

You'll be fine.
I did it once trying to get to a wedding reception a bit quick. Came round a corner a bit quick just before the road entered an NSL and police car coming the opposite way flashed his lights at me. Needless to say i turned off the NSL and took the back lanes in case he turned around sharpish and chased me down. i would habe been stuff then, big time

Your fine. The police tend to use common sense, as long as you weren't doing anything dangerous your unlikely to be stopped.

Unless they are struggling to meet their quota of arrests :D

In NZ and Oz they have forward facing versions of handheld speed guns mounted on the windscreen, the only record speed not photo* so if they don't pull you no chance of ticket lucky

*in NZ at least.

Yeah, this can result in some Dukes of Hazard style escapades. You're driving along the motorway behind a police car and they'll just whip a u-turn, at high speed usually, put on the lights and go zooming off to catch the offender who was coming the other way.

The first time I saw it I was like

My (kiwi) wife thought my reaction was hilarious.

The police presence is very, very much more noticeable on the roads here and in Oz compared to the UK.

No, because driving in excess of the posted speed limit is not neccesarily driving without due care.

I've seen them pull it out on Road Wars/Cops with Cameras etc :p

Surely you are not paying due care if you are breaking the speed limit or driving clearly faster than the speed limit?

Did this on the bike the other week but was more like 120mph. group of us out. police officer about got whip lash trying to turn his head to look he did it that quickly.

Just kept going and disappeared, needles to say My *** was going like a rabbits nose

This has happened to me a few times, I've always put my foot down not wanting to find out whether they clocked me or not ;)

Sounds like you speak from experience, but why is it any different over there? Or simply because they have enough power to spin around and come after?

the UK has strick type approval laws regarding what can and cant be used for speed detection.

The kit they use in Oz and the USA to read your speed comming the other way isnt type approved here as its potentially not accurate enough and prone to error.

in OZ however, speeding is right up there with drink driving in terms of the police's priority, so they dont have any worries about it being accurate or not, and just use it anyway.

You want to see their speed cameras, they are usually mobile, placed on about a 2 foot high tripod at the side of the road, and moved round two or 3 times per day. Like the mobile ones we have, but with no give away HUGE white van.

Just a tiny SLR camera sized thing on a 2 foot high tripod at the side of the road.

Contrary to what a lo of people on here seem to believe the police can clock cars in both directions (the laser system simply shows the speed like "-55mph") and it is admissible in court as the system has been approved by the home office. You were simply lucky that the cops who passed you didn't care

On a side note the system has been withdrawn in Canada because it was found to be unreliable

what system is type approved for taking a speed reading while moving towards a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction ?

They don't record it round here else I'd be getting fines every other week!*

*hypothetically of course!

radar and laser systems could both do this, however both are not approved for use in UK in mobile installations (that is, in a moving vehicle)

These type of systems are however common in mainland europe and as others have said, down under

The OP is in the clear, as already detailed.

The copper could only do you if you persisted with the speed after he'd turned around and begun to chase you and then caught you with his in-car gear.

But if you carried on speeding after passing a copper, you deserve everything you get. :)

It requires the opinion of two police officers to convict. This is coming from an officer i know in south wales police.

no it doesnt

one officer and a calibrated instrument is sufficient

this can be a radar gun, but equally if its a proper traffic car, it can also be the speedo.

Normal beat cars and prisoner transport vans dont have calibrated speedos however.

It only needs to be two if there is an absence of such a calibrated instrument.

If you were in trouble they would have turned round. I nearly got crashed into by a **** in a Mitsi Warrior who was in the wrong lane of a roundabout so i had to accelerate quickly to get to the lane before him as he was pushing me into the central reservation when i hit the lines it was covered in dirt and dust which then inertia drifto as a police car was going past the other side of the road they turned round and pulled me over and told me off :(
