Speeding ticket

Isn't the get-out-of-jail card the fact that the letter was sent 2 months after he was pulled over? Doesn't it have to be within 2 weeks or am I thinking of something else?

I Agree, in my oppinion its slightly anal, and a waste of police time, especially with all the real crime and anti social behavior around today.

Cheers

Everyone says that when they're breaking the law. Standard "you should be out catching rapists and murderers" attitude. Fortunately, the world doesn't work like that.

Im not saying you shouldnt get done for speeding but with the shortage of police officers and their excuse that theres no one available to send when your a victim of crime I really think they should prioritize. Its not like he went shooting past at 50mph, obviously then he should be pulled over and ticketed.

I had a police car behind me all the way up a B road with a 30 limit the other day and H kept at a constant 35mph with the flow of he traffic, had I been pulled over and given a ticket I would have happily told the copper he was acting a bit anal ... Have you seen some of the really dangerous driving on the road today? The amount of times Ive had to restrain myself from chasing after someone who's almost hit my car whilst driving like a complete ***k. Not enough police for zero tolerance, so prioritize is the best way to go .

Are public resources better spent prosecuting drivers for travelling 4 MPH - literally, a walking pace - above the speed limit than say... doing anything else?

'Everyone' probably says that because they have a point.

Quite. I'd bet close to 90+% of the population would prefer a hard stance on 'petty crime' like theft of bikes, shed break ins, car stereo thefts etc over prosecuting 34 in a 30.

Our family has had a few bicycles nicked over the years, and the standard police response is 'here is a crime ref, call your insurers'

It's a total joke that these crimes which genuinely do end up with offenders moving onto bigger things get left so the super criminal motorist can be chased.

...and to further add...

Should I keep taking my eyes off the road constantly checking I havnt drifted a couple of mph over the limit in fear of being fined for it.

Im not anti police, they do a difficult job and should be praised for it, but any copper who thinks his times being well spent giving someone a ticket for going 4mph over the limit is definitely a http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jobsworth

There must be, as if I am going 31-32mph, or even 33mph I have never got a ticket for it? unless the camera was broke, but highly unlikely.

Cameras will have a threshold yes, but that varies depending where you are (or thats my understanding)

In terms of what you can be prosecuted for, there is no threshold

I wonder if anyone has been successfully prosecuted for 1 MPH over the limit? I imagine there are a few interesting defences that could be made.

Absolutely, which is probably why its almost unheard of. I have heard of plenty reports of 3mph over though - under the "threshold" of most fixed cameras.

Well I was following a police car doing over 40 in a 30mph zone, for a good 4 miles today.

Guess you were unlucky.

I heard (many years ago) that the police can't pull you over for speeding if you're actually behind them and they're also speeding. How true this is, I've no idea.

Where do you draw the line then? 35? 37? 41? 45? 50?

Bwahaha. Of course they can and actually report you for speeding, especially over a considerable distance. There is case law on it.
