Hi Guys

recently started burning a lot of AVI files to DVD using the Windows DVD Maker built into Windows 7

this process is slow as the encoding part of the process takes a considerable amount of time.

the reason it takes forever is because it doesn't seem to load the processor up past 30% or take advantage of multiple cores.

there does not seem to be any way to increase the speed of this encoding process at all which is becoming quite frustrating.

like many of you I have a multi core system. I would like to take advantage of my four cores [and the hyper threading if possible] during this process.

if it is not possible to apply multi core support to the built in windows DVD burner then what programs would you suggest to burn AVI files to DVD that support faster encoding?

I read a lot about video encoding on graphics cards? does this apply here?

not got a great deal of experience in this field so all help would be appreciated.

given convertxtodvd a try.

it doesnt encode any faster than Windows DVD Maker

it doesnt load multiple cores up past 30% either

i get the feeling that I am not making the most of my processors capabilities

You can't encode on multiple cores as it's not something that can be threaded.

The only way you could properly utilise your processor for encoding would be to encode several things at once.

ah. that settles it then.

well is there any way of encoding to dvd any faster?

i know 10 minutes doesn't sound like much but its just annoying when you see the cpu usage at 20% and you're sat waiting. :(

what about graphics encoding? or does that not apply to this?

Not really, the CPU is the limit. I've not encountered any GPU based encoders but they could exist I guess. Not sure if encoding on a GPU would be any faster though.

Encoding to DVD strikes me as odd anyway but then I got rid of all my dvds and anything that could play them years ago. :)
