Speeding whilst overtaking on a single carriageway

About three years ago in was driving along a nice stretch of A road, came across a queue of 3 cars doing 50 ish behind a police car, so 4 cars in total.

A straight came up and I went past the lot doing over 85 as I passed the police car,
As I pulled in I let the speed drift down to 60 ish and carried on.

No one chased, and no tickets ever appeared

A lot of the time the police will allow some leeway and common sense. But a camera is very binary :/

But then, a camera isn't going to see someone doing burnouts at 30mph either, or using fake plates, or with a car in dangerous condition. They are a silly way to police the roads I think. Once a village gets a speed camera, the police never seem to stop by ever again.

What's with these very specific speed estimates? You remember you were doing 63 and could judge the other car was doing 44?

If you were doing 19mph more than he was then you could have just maintained that speed whilst pulling out to overtake. You'd have been doing over 8m/s more and could have pulled out, passed him and been back on your side of the road in a few seconds perfectly safely. There was no need to speed up to get past quicker.

Yes he could have, but I'm part of the crew that speed to overtake.
The less time I spend on the wrong side of the road the better IMO.

Obviously this doesn't mean doing 120mph + as another poster has flippantly suggested.

Depends if the operator has been on the crack shot sniper course or not I suppose.
Surely the camera is just pointed down the road and they read the speed of the car? Is the camera built into the detection device?

Pretty sure I got done and I was like 800 yards away at the time.

Thats only 240m away though so well in range for the laser and a camera zoomed in a bit.

It's illegal to speed no matter what your circumstance. There are few if any mitigating circumstances for the general public and overtaking safely would certainly not be one. Please let's not have 500 straw men what if's now. You break the speed limit, you get filmed, you are likely to be nicked and you should accept that and move on.

This. People need to stop trying to justify, the law doesn't work like that.

When I looked up the potential range of a mobile speed camera every indication was that on a straight stretch of road they could get you from 2 miles away! However, as mentioned above it's all down to the operator getting the shot on your car, so there's always a possibility that if it's busy, and you slowed down as you approached, that you'd get away with it.

Apparently in Spain you are allowed upto 20 km/h over the posted limit for an overtake maneuver. a lot of sense in this. We have some stupid rules here on speed limits.

I checked that out and it's actually true :) "Drivers of cars and motorcycles may exceed the limits shown by 20km/h in order to overtake a slower vehicle outside built-up areas, on roads with one lane in each direction." clearly the Spanish have more common sense than us!
