Speedlimits and tailgaters

You are entitled to drive below the speed limit if you like so stuff them. I tend to just go with the flow which around here seems to be an indicated 32-35 in a 30 limit.

My wife drives on the button on the speedo (or at least she does when I'm a passenger) and I do find that people tend to sit on her rear bumper.

As for causing an accident because someone should have been further behind you... WOW. This is the reason why I run a dashcam. While it would still be my fault for hitting them I'd be sure to pass the footage on to both insurers and the police.

DRIVING TEST TRAFFIC LIGHTS
During a driving test, dealing with traffic lights will require a similar technique to dealing with junctions. The MSPSL (Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed and Look) routine must be applied. A good level of anticipation and planning is also required. For instance, if approaching traffic lights and from a distance they have been on green for some time, as you approach, expect there is a high probability they may change and prepare for this in advance. Also traffic lights at pedestrian crossings for instance, if in the distance you see people waiting, as you approach there is a high probability the lights will change.

This was exactly what I was doing, what I've described previous, so can we put this to bed please?!?!

Where in that quote does it say 'Immediately reduce speed to 66% of the speed limit'?

Anticipation and planning is about being ready to react, not slamming the brakes on because there are some green traffic lights :p

Prepare means be ready to stop, not brake to 20mph because someone is tailgating you.

Jesus!!!
Right lets be clear. I DO NOT pass EVERY green light by slowing down by a third. This is the only instance where it's been clear and I've slowed for these lights.. I only slowed a little as there some idiot right behind me. If he wasn't so ruddy close I wouldn't have slowed. Simple!
I feel like I'm damned if I did and damned if I didn't....

Just give up driving TBH.

Find a really wide road that everyone treats as a 40-50 mph that is a 30mph and sit on the limit. Feel and see the hatred ensue.

Frequently do this on a local route in fact slow down to 25 and you'll be murdered.

Sadly when the public pass thier driving test the Highway Code is thrown in the bin and the drive-how-you-bloody-well-like code comes in.

Sadly true. There are plenty of roads in Liverpool which are four or six lane dual carriageways (2+2 or 3+3) with ridiculous artificially low 30mph limits. They have armco central reservations, high concrete walls to the nearside and are in non-residential areas (often no buildings at all!).

Add in regular entry/exit slips from other arterial routes and I'm usually the only car, or certainly one of the only cars, anywhere near 30mph. It can be quite intimidating during busy periods when you're surrounded by 40-50mph traffic ranging from superminis to HGVs all approaching 50 and hanging off your arse. Beeping, flashing and swearing/gesturing are commonplace and it's not what you'd call a relaxing drive. It's honestly akin to trying to do 40mph down a motorway at times.

Just keep your zone of relative safety ('safety bubble') as best you can and ignore them, easing off from the vehicle in front where required to maintain a safe stopping distance.

As for the green traffic light issue, there's a kernel of truth. Certainly with police class one or RoADAR/RoSPA you're taught to 'acknowledge the junction' or 'give the junction respect', which depending on sightlines usually involves easing off (or removing) the drive until you're actually at the intersection and can see it's clear, then reapplying drive and pulling the few lost mph back to the limit.

Certainly nothing as dramatic as going 30 > 20, though in fairness the latest IAM stuff I've read does talk about always slowing for green ATS and going (their example) from 70mph to 50mph on approach. I can't comment further as I'm with RoADAR and we're certainly encouraged to maintain progress....

You've obviously not read the thread - nobody has ever said the cars being hit at at fault. If they're braking unnecessarily then they were a contributory factor and could have also prevented it happening. That's different from causing it, and they'd end up with a non fault claim. But this doesn't mean they couldn't have prevented it and, like has been pointed out, is one reason why non fault claims push up premiums.

The difference between taking action to prevent an accident and not being legally liable when one happens is the difference between a good driver and one who just has a license

That's my view of this too.

He brake tested him, and got off because all rear end impacts are automatically the fault of the party behind.
