Speedo Accuracy

? Take the car back.

Speedos should always be in the ++++ as when you get done for speeding you WILL really have no excuse for it :)

Sold it so it doesn't really matter. :)

120mph in a 1.2! Now that's hardcore. I've seen reports of people doing 100 in a 1.4 Clio.

cos the guage loooses all accuracy after about 55mph in my fiesta. Gps is the "correct" speed.

120mph on the guage is about 100mph true.

My 306's speedo over read by 6% across the range. When I went from 13" to 15" wheels my rolling radius went up by 6.2%, a happy coincidence but one that now means I've got a spot on speedo

...I know that when I drive along 30mph roads at around 29mph people are always up my rear end which gives me the impression that either 90% of people want to speed or maybe my speedo's off slightly and there getting annoyed at me possibly sitting at 25mph? It feels like im doing the right speed though

It is probably because 30 is too low for the road and conditions. There are 30 roads near me where it is common to do 40 because the road is so wide and straight. So when you come up behind a retard doing 25-28 and you can barely get into 4th gear following them, or you even have to brake occasionally to avoid gaining on them too much (slight downhill gradient), it does get on your nerves a tad.

” Anyway driving at 33 in your car implying 30 real is not the real boundary as there is an additional 5-7% leeway that the camera gives you before happy snapping time.”
I thought that 5-7% error works against you. Surly if you’re doing 35 then the error can make you appear to be doing another 7% over 35. Which is enough to get a fine.

yes, that is one thing that annoys me... although the oposite end of scale.... im following a line of cars in a 50mph zone..... we are all doing 45-50. yet if a camera comes up everyone slows to 35-40. Why is that?

its even worse when people decide to slam there brakes on and slow down to 25-30mph.

Well I do stick to 29mph to 30mph. So I shouldn't be annoying people that badly. One thing I don't do though is jam my breaks on for a speed camera. I already know im not speeding and I know that if theres a 40mph limit and im doing 39mph, im not going to get done :)

Whatever gave you that idea

As per my 1st post you're driving speed is at the sweet spot exactly as I had explained and practice myself :p
My car doesn't do that. If I drive at an indicated 33, I'm doing about 32/32.5, which is 6-8% over the speed limit. I can't say I've ever been flashed doing that, and I've even had people behind flash their lights, seemingly in some attempt to either warn me of the camera, or try to fool me in to thinking it has flashed.

As I can trust my speedo to be near-perfect in normal circumstances, I can factor in the camera+copper leeway in my head, without the ambiguity of also trying to factor in speedo inaccuracy. I.e., overtaking police car, I will do 78 indicated - probably about 76/77, as they are not likely to be bothered with that. If my speedo wasn't accurate, I'd need to do up to 85 indicated to maintain the same progress!!

LOL If that happens to you too then you're on the ball :)

My BM is within 1mph of my Indago. The hire car Lacetti I had this week read around 3 mph over.

On my old Cinquecento it used to be about 5 mph out from what I was doing from GPS Wise... speedo seems to be about 2mph out on my Lanos

ive been wating a digital display for ages! i couldnt find one.. whare can i get them? or might better to post who makes em. THANKS!

So driving along at 61mph you were actually looking at another cars speedo rather than the road ahead

Seriously mate, concentrate!

i think a glance over his fine, as you would to check your speed or check the sat nav.

its the guys that are saying "only reads 127 at 140" that i would worry about!

The MK4 Fiesta over-reads by around 2mph at 30mph and 5-7mph at 70mph. The ST reads pretty much dead on at all speeds :)

Do all GPS units have a speed readout? I am looking at getting the Tomtom One but I can't find out on their website if it has this feature. Anyone know?

Dont know about all units, but the Tomtom does.

When I got the MX5, I thought 30mph seemed very slow, so I was driving around at 40mph (indicated) all the time. When I got around to getting the GPS out it was under reading by 10mph!!!! Whoever swaped the dials for UK ones made a right bodge there!

You'd think that with the sophistication of instrumentation that is available today they'd just make speedometers 100% accurate at all speeds.
In many vehicles the computer does in fact know the "proper" speed, as it were. I can get a readout from my car that tallies with the GPS near perfectly, but the speedo over-reads by about 1%. No idea why, as it's digitally controlled by the computer :p

From personal experience : Average speed camera stretches on the M1 where the limit is 40mph - I would maintain 44mph.

When seeing the boys in blue everyone slows down to 70mph (ARRRRGH THIS IS SO ANNOYING - 70 is NOT your actual speed dimwits), so I'd over take everyone casually at 77mph then find a truck to hide in front off before shortly sprinting off to regain 'normal' motorway speeds.

I'm not an advocate for speeding as I used to drive up and down the M1 daily (300mile round trip). Its all about MAINTAINING A GOOD constant speed without bursting occasionally to illegal speeds.

He he, your one of the drivers that'll stick with me & my HGV (which reads accurately on its tachograph) then :)

It amazes me just how many people don't seem to realise what an "Average Speed Check" actually is!

The number of donkeys who brake when they see the SPECS cameras is surprisingly high. - Muppets! lol

From a personal point of view, please try to refrain from using HGV's as hiding places, ta. ;) kind of gets annoying you see........

If drivers maintained speeds, kept to lanes & generally used their eyes & brains, the roads would flow superbly.

Ho hum!
