Speedstep error ? Or false report. ?

I am experiencing a strange problem , if it is actually a problem at all.

I basically noticed the other day that my speedstep on my system had stopped working. ? Acorrding to CPU-Z and real/core temp my CPU's multi is always high like 18 minimum and mainly 21x so full load.

However the system is completely idle. Doing absolutely nothing. Reported CPU usage is like 0.5 - 1.5% as normal when idle. However according to these programs mentioned the CPU always remains high ghz speed due to the high multi. Normally with the speedstep enabled , when doing basic things the system reverts back to a much lower speed and usually a 6x multiplier. This is not happening. All the options are enabled and are running fine..

The system itself is running fine , no problems , no speed slows or anything. Its just this report.

Since i over clock it was basically reporting 3.7ghz all the time. Even as idle. I reset the bios to stock as i was originally worried. Even at stock bios this happens too. I have even removed ram and it still happens on each batch of memory i have. ? I am now only using 6GB rather than 12GB , no change.

Another point to note is at stock , with speedstep and auto voltage set , it does revert the voltages down to 0.944v as you would expect , however it still reports 2.8ghz 21x multi. ?? What is also alarming is that it sometime puts 1.2v through the cpu from the CPU-Z report. at 2.8ghz thats far too much.

I have since run Kaspersky , SPybot SD , A-Squared , Iobit security 360 , windows defender.

Nothing reported or found that was a threat. ?? ?? ???

Is this just a glitch. ?? Or something more sinister. ?

Please , any info on this greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance. :D

Thanks for the reply. :)

But all my temp progs report it being at least 2.6ghz and upto 2.8ghz as well.

This has only happened in the past few days. CPU-Z has been reporting fine until i notice this in the past couple of days. ?? Strange.

I do not currently have Everest installed sad to say. Any other free apps i can try or you recommend.

Ok managed to get a trial key for Everest.

This is what it showed.

This is reporting as this should be. Showing the CPU dropped to 1.6ghz on the speedstep. ? Now why would everything else suddenly miss report. ? All my programs worked great until this week. Now , core temp , real temp , and CPU-Z shows wrong.

Would you all say that this is a miss report and nothing to worry about or would you continue to look for answers. ?

Many thanks in advance

Looks like most of the temp monitoring softwares are not totally tuned with the I7 9xx CPU series yet. That's why, I use Core Temp, Real Temp, CPUID Hardware monitor, CPUZ and Everest to monitor my voltages and temps.

I hope that's the case. :)

However , now as this seemingly is a software problem i reinstalled my other 6GB memory and then re clocked the system to 3.7ghz 176x21 in the bios.

When i got into windows , i opened CPU-Z and the others to see what it would say. It showed the CPU @ 3.7ghz constant. So i then opened Everest and used the CPUID to show the difference as it did yesterday. Strange to say now Everest reports the same as all the others and it shows the cpu at full ghz even when idle. ??

The only other thing i would like to point out is the temps. Now as i constantly monitored the temps and clocks in the past defining the stability of the system i am aware of what they should be. Now at those temps thats pretty much how they'd be with the speedstep working fine and running nice and low. IF the cpu was indeed running at 3.7ghz i do not believe they would be that low. ? I could be wrong here as the workload is 1%.

Any help or info appreciated.

I've got lower temps than that on a 4.0 GHtz OC with speedstep disabled. In your case, speedstep will no longer kick in because you already set the multuplier to 21 which in effect also disabled Turbo. If you want speedstep, then you need to put your multiplier in auto mode.

Hi reygjabla , Thanks for the reply.

Id say you got some freakin cool machine then. Temps that low at 4ghz. Good for you.

The speedstep is enabled mate. I have had it set correctly for months now. I have it set using standard bios settings , and the turbo is enabled.
I have personally tweaked my system when i was hitting 4.2ghz / 4ghz , now 3.7ghz as im using 12GB memory and at all clocks when the speedstep was enabled it worked and reported in all apps. I know computers very well , and nothing has been changed or amended to cause this. This is doing what your seeing on its own ! ! ! !
The bios is using the normal 20x multi , with the turbo on so it uses its 21x when required. There is no auto multi feature on this motherboard.
I have been using it this way for a while now. Everything was fine the settings were as they are now and the speedstep worked perfectly and all my apps mentioned reported correctly too , and now this is happening. By itself.

This is why i am bumping this thread , as if it is really doing what the progs show then im having a big problem.

Thanks

Here's mine @ 3.8 with 1.15VCore

There is no " auto " setting for the multiplier in the bios.

The speedstep , and turbo are ON.

If you go to CPU settings in the bios, just tap the (-) sign on your numeric keypad until it goes to the lowest setting. Next to that is "Auto". That's how I set it on mine. (Asus Ranpage II Extreme)

Same on my p6t deluxe for cpu ratio, though i read on a guide that some boards need eist enabled to run turbo mode, it suggests checking for bios updates.
