As there have been a spate of eight-legged beastie-themed threads recently on the dear old OCUK GD board I thought I'd share something with you.

We've always had spiders come in throughout the summer/autumn. Big hairy house spiders that run at you when you're try to watch babest-- I mean documentaries late at night. I'd say about 10-20 would be average. I hate 'em.

Anyway, I heard from a wizened old hag who has a wart on the end of her nose and lives under a bridge that conkers are the answer. Put a handful of he schoolboy's favourite under each window and the spiders won't come in. Rubbish, I thought, but I tried it anyway and last year we had no spiders. Not a single one.

Is this is a conicidence? Do any of you use this method already? What exactly is it about conkers that affects the spider (if it does)?

I've heard of this before but never tried it or know if it works.

You can also get devices which plug into the mains sockets in your house and are supposed to emit some noise or vibration of some sort (not really sure) that is claimed reduces the amount of spiders coming into your house.

Seem to remember them being designed for boats? Not sure if I'm thinking of the same thing, don't know many boats with power sockets. Anyways that might also be worth a look.

We have some spider repellant spray which I think is make from conkers, I'm not sure how well it works, I keep forgetting to spray it around the windows/doors.

It smells a bit odd, but not unpleasant.

True. Conkers also warn away tigers. Keep one on your windowsill and you will not get tigers in your house*

*unless you live in an area with a population of wild tigers or possibly next to a very lax zoo

Who says the spiders come in through the windows? Our houses are full of places where they could sneak in, I'd need a LOT of conkers.

Conkers contain a minute species of Furtim Proeliator Formica ('ninja-ant'), that fight off their natural enemy- the shameless running spider.

This also explains their proficiency in the autumnal combat sport of 'Conkers'. :)

soo, when are conkers ready? im gonna go grab a bagfull of them! im sick of the damn long legged spiders here, killed a good 50+ this year.

I have a newly-built flat so apart from a couple of vents here and there the only ways in are the windows, really. I have a good handfull on each of the window sills in small bowls.

Dearest zippo0r, the conkers will be available for picking soon!

My mum told my gf this 'fact' so we had them all over the house. Still had the odd spider (no more or less than before tbh) :D

Get a bottle of Citronella, Neil's Yard do one for about £12. Spray it around where you normally find spiders and you're sorted. I haven't seen one in my house in the last 3 months since spraying it and I normally get gigantic spiders all year round due to living right next to a wood :)

theres no proof conkers work ,but we put conkers around our fireplace in the living room since we have not had a spider in that room before we were getting spiders every month or so.

Its now about 5 months with no spiders.

Saying that yesterday i went into the conservatory fairly late and there was 2 huge spiders on the wall

You realise that a lot of the spiders you see in the home actually LIVE in your home. They haven't popped in through a window. They were born IN your house.

So putting conkers near windows and other openings is just keeping the spiders inside! Muahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I've had a lot of spiders here too, quite big ones (about the size of a 50p pence). In the few months i've been here seen at least 7 of this size and a number of smaller ones. At first I released them (out the window/put outside) but i've had to start killing them off instead because they keep getting in.

Everytime I kill them more appear though, killed 4 spiders last night (1 big, the others small) and even now I have another small spider in the corner of the ceiling in this room. I don't like to kill them but dread to think how many spiders i'd have around if I didn't.

The place is fairly new so they must be getting in through the windows, but what with the weather can't really close the windows up, and besides I like to get some fresh air in.
