Hi

Before I start, yes, I am a wuss, and I can't stand large spiders. I don't mind the smaller ones. It's the ones which are freakishly large they just freak me out. I agree this is a dumb thing to post on OcUK but I am extremely paranoid at this point :)

So the story - moved into a new build house just over a week ago. Front garden and the side of the house was overgrown with weeds. The lawn in the back garden was overgrown but massively overgrown. Yesterday I did a clear out of all the weeds, and mowed the lawn twice (took 2 attempts to get it to an acceptable length). All good so far. To finish up I watered the lawn and put some weed killer down. The sacks of garden waste I kept on paving on the side of the house.

Later that evening, I am sat down watching TV and from the corner of my eye I see something in the corner of my eye shuffle. I look more closely and it's a spider around 6cm in size (just the body) - so pretty big. I freak out, get the hoover and suck it up. I think nothing of it and sit back down and resume watching TV. 10 minutes later, I see something else in the same area - I look again and yep, it's a carbon copy of the first spider, similar size in the same area. Again I vacuum it up.

I was pretty sure it's wasn't the same spider because I vacuumed the other one well and put the vacuum away upstairs. So again I suck this one up. I look around at this point as I am no extremely paranoid. I see no cracks or holes in the area where the spiders came from. I open up the storage cupboard in the room next door and by the side i see a small crack (not big enough for the bigger spiders to get through) and 2 small spiders. co-incidence? not sure..

So, are there any tips on getting these spiders out? At the moment there is pretty much no clutter or furniture which makes them easy to spot. I am thinking of going around with a caulk gun and siliconing any cracks up and hoovering thoroughly. Would doing all that gardening cause a 1 off freak appearance of large spiders? Are spider repellent sprays any good and worth giving a go?

It is that time of year - I've removed 2-3 big ones the last week - give it another week or so and you probably won't see anything other than the very occasional small/medium one for months inside.

Vacuuming them doesn't work - they climb back out. Also, it makes you look even more of a wuss.

I'm not scared of cellar spiders, in fact I usually leave them in place because they eat the ones I am scared of - house spiders!

I do the drinking glass/paper trick to get those out. And I throw them over the fence toward the neighbour's house so they go in there instead of back into mine :D

Thankfully my cat has developed a taste for big hairy spiders... Often wake up to find only a few scattered legs remaining.

She's also good for removing spiders from the bath...

My GF used to constantly be asking me to catch spiders.

Since getting our cat she rarely asks me.

If I do see a spider I just go get the cat and she eats them.

Another vote for getting a cat.

We had a mini infestation and I was finding 4-5 spiders a week, two weeks looking after a friends cat and I haven't seen a single one since.

It's the garden (wolf?) spiders which creep me out. Most of the others I'm fine with. I especially welcome those spindly ones - no idea what they're called.

I recall seeing one on a door frame around three years ago. I've never seen one as big as that before and hopefully, I never will. A pint glass wouldn't even have been close enough to cover that thing (probably a female). I broke out into a sweat and after several minutes I managed to throw a tea towel on it and then put the whole thing outside. Makes me shudder to think of it. *Goes off to check the windows and curtains*...

I get loads of spiders in this house, for some reason.

In my old house I would normally catch them and release them outside, but I had to wage war against the current ones as I was getting so many so it's KOS now.

I cleared out the garage the other day, had some boxes which give them nice places to hide. Saw 4 massive ones! I don't even want to think what is above the rafters.

I have a m8 who is terrified of spiders, and another who favourite trick is to pop a big ol' spider on his mouth, close it then start chatting to you and the spider scuttles out of his mouth across his face.

Seeing those two experience his party trick, to this day is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

Seen some monstrous house spiders doing laps round my living room.

Usually just leave them unless I catch one near my bed or on my laundry. They then get swiftly ejected out the window.

I catch and release into Hungry Hippos' letterbox, don't tell him though.

Conkers are supposed to be a good deterrent apparently. Chestnut oil as well ( I know it works on garden furniture)

Our cats a bloody wuss!

She just jumps around them giving them the evil eye while they wander off! Only thing she does is maybe pat them once or twice, like she's wishing them luck... stupid animal.

To be expected considering this is how she spends most of her day though...

I don't mind getting them, usually just slam them with some tissue as the big ones never seem to bother with webs - just scaring the other half by running behind her bedside table! :D

New builds are the worst for spiders. They usually sit half built and then empty for long periods letting the spiders get in and comfortable, then along you come and disturb them.

We waged war on the large brown spiders in our new build for the first couple of
Months, was a daily occurance to see one running across the carpet as soon as the lights were off.

I knew something was up when my cctv caught a guy in a spider costume putting something through my letterbox! :D

Depending where you are in the country it isn't quite that cold in the south east yet
but I'm sure our time will come when these fugly beasts start to invade our homes.

spray the perimeter of your home with this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003R0E...=9046085&hvtargid=pla-382521949333&th=1&psc=1

just a thought :)

you could just make your own repellent for like £2 than pay £12 for something that will last a week tops.

they don't like peppermint oil and a few other essential oils. all you need to do is throw all the smells they don't like into a spray bottle. add a carrier oil so it doesn't get washed away with rain or dry out as fast. then spray perimeter of house once a week.

or buy those high frequency plug in things which emit a hum you cannot hear but insects can. they won't come near because of the noise.
