Sounds good. Not good news for Apple if this succeeds.

I'm sure there are WMA --> whatever Apple uses somewhere about?

EDIT

I really don't get how they're going to stop people from putting the music up for download on torrent or something, unless they put some rubbish copy limiter thing on the track.

Considering how long Apple took to even break even with iTunes--it was mainly a vehicle for iPod sales, and these guys aren't selling hardware--I doubt this will be financially viable.

From what i heard on the news yesterday it could be a intresting development in the internet music industry,

they need to do something anyway as they continually gave a stat yesterday that 1 in 40 music downloads is legal

Just a little word of caution - it'll be WMA DRM'ed to the max, and as you know we don't discuss breaking copy protection here as it's illegal both under US and EU law. So let's just leave it as 'won't work on iPod' please.

Nice idea in theory - but it depends how intrusive the ads have to be to get their revenue. A lot of companies are having trouble with the 'advert funded' model now as the market is getting a bit saturated. They claim it targets late teens/early twenties, which is apparently a hard-to-reach segment of the market (hence the adverts), but that segment is also the most likely to have an iPod. Good luck to them.

There will still be DRM....but the music will be free.

Not meaning to split hairs but I thought the rules applied to "warez" , "gamez" and generally all copyrighted software?

That doesn't seem to specify audio/visual media, and if it does what about the threads where we discuss backing up commercial dvd's? Seems like the same thing as WMA DRM protection removal?

I would have thought that, as a general rule, discussion of anything that allows you to use copyrighted material without the explicit consent of the copyright owner is off limits......

most people know how to anyways but still, no talk of using it outside the copyright owners permission is allowed.

thats my take on the rules
