What causes the disparity in price between different spirits. For example, why is a litre bottle of Smirnoff £14, while a 70cl bottle of brandy is around £25?

What are the reasons behind the high prices for a certain spirit?

The price depends on what type of spirit, therefore the manufacturing process (including time) and what the quality is like.

Smirnoff is made en masse, in Italy. It is cheap to make and does not require time to improve. A half decent brandy takes more care and time to produce something of a decent quality. Lower quality vodka is more drinkable (mixed) than a lower quality brandy, which can be just grim.

Basically, you cannot compare cheap own label vodka with a high quality Scotch. They are a million miles apart in how they are made and with what care.

What is interesting is that Smirnoff is the same proce, more or less and Finlandia, but they are miles apart in terms of quality. I still see people buying Smirnoff all the time and I pity their poor taste.

If you just buy spirits to get drunk, just get the cheapest vodka you can from a reputable source.

Brand familiarity and the fact that's it what the pubs stock probably. Anyone who buys spirits just to get drunk are totally missing the point. Might as well buy a 2 ltr bottle of white lightning.

The OP may have been/be under the impression that Smirnoff is a premium brand- it is marketed as such, as many believe it to be the case but infact it is mass produced and poor compared with rivals not disimiliar in price.

It needs to be mass produced 'as many' consistently purchase it making it the worlds best selling vodka. Though wouldn't be my first choice... ;)

Smirnoff is marginally better than the cheapo vodka that goes the rounds at xmas for a fiver :p

As above different spirits/types/processing/brands/ages all completely different
