Split Air con

Though someone else had just said about 5500 when given the same details.
That is suspiciously cheap I'd be wondering if they are a cowboy installer or not.

That was a rough figure when I gave someone my room sizes etc.
Probably for basic-midrange brands and their models.

Something about the VAT changes in March if I don’t get it installed by then
Yeah, unless current gov decide to extend the VAT-free period. From 1st April 2027, installs will attrct VAT at 5%

They’re a Mitsubishi partner. I guess I’ll find out when they do the visit.

Always prepared for them to inhale through their teeth when they change their mind

yeah, that's always plausible. happened to me as well.
one installer quoted me £6.6k over email (sent in pics and floor plans and details!)
came for a site visit and that number magically ballooned to £9k
needless to say i never replied to that email, nor answered their calls after

Any recommended installers in Gloucestershire? I've reached out to 4 companies, only one has got back to me and they're coming to give a quote toward the end of October.

Sounds about right. They're all drowning in work at the moment, so you'd be lucky to (a) get a call back or (b) get a non-ridiculous quote for the job.

FWIW, I contacted 9 local companies and 2 national companies.
The national companies were lol quotes (£12-14k for mid-range systems) so they were non-starters to begin with.
Of the 9 local companies only 3 replied. I got ghosted by one after asking more questions about the installation...probably dodged a bullet.
2 came to visit, of which one increased the quote by 25% so I ghosted them.
Went with the last one... (£7.6k for a 4-way multi split Daikin perfera system).

@RockLobster how did your visit get on?

Suggested only one place in the main bedroom. Where our radiator is now. I said no to that straight away. The first guy we had suggested another place in the main bedroom which was behind the door opposite en-suite. This could work as Mitsubishi Electric do a 2kW mini split which is a small size. My wife is having none of it though. Floor mounted Daikin is not going to fit where you said because of chest of drawers. The floor mounted unit is quite big.

Anyway he’s going to quote for the landing 5kw (Where I initially said) and snug (easy this) downstairs 2.5kw. When I suggested routing condensate through wall into bathroom and then into sink waste he wasn’t keen at all because bathroom is fully tiled. Pump will go in the loft.

5kw landing, 2.5kw snug. 3 port external which I think is 8kw. Daikin Prefera What we thinking? 5.5k? Oh he also said electric work on top as I need 20amp for external unit. I think he also installs Fujitsu Airstage which I’ve read is good and cheaper.

3 port external for a daikin should be 6.8kw max
perfera is daikin's top offering of their standard range (sensira -> comfora -> perfera)
leccy work should be £500-ish i've been told

an alternative is to have trunking inside the house on the wall to hide the condensate pipe, then drill straight out of the wall
(this is what i'm having done for mine so mine is a fully pump-less system, despite having all my internal units mounted on internal walls)

It would likely look a bit unsightly. Not just the pipe, but when the AC is running in hot weather you'll have a constant wet patch on the roof that over time will likely stand out. This is why I asked for my drain pipe to be connected to my gutter down pipe because if was on my drive way I'd end up with a noticeable damp area that over time will look worse than the rest of the drive.

@RockLobster what @LiE said. You could put a downpipe and let it drip onto the ground floor roof and let it collect onto it's gutter, but yeah, will leave a wet patch on the roof in the summer.

Depends on which you prefer more
Pump = more noise, extra part to break, more maintenance, technically more difficult install (not your problem, but you may be paying for it)
External condensate run = looks more unsightly

Yeah it’s tough one. I might go with the pump and see how it goes. If the pump is a pain. 1) Go outside like you say. 2) Drill straight through into bathroom ceiling height and conduit down in the corner of the bathroom into waste. 2) Chase wall on unit side then drill through into bathroom lower down then into waste.

I’m interested to see what pump he recommends. I did say I didn’t want one of those mini pumps in the corner of the conduit - mini lime green, etc.

Found a local company on Facebook, reviews on there back to 2022 and all seem good/genuine, pictures of the installs look neat. We're after a split system in 4 rooms, and I've been chatting to him, sending floorpans/pictures etc. He thinks ~£1500 per room, and is coming next week for a physical survey. My only slight concern is he appears to be a sole trader, with no companies house details etc, not sure how common this is or if it's worth being concerned about.

Fgas/refcom registered?
If something goes wrong and the installer is not registered your insurance is unlikely to cover.

Also check what systems he installs. Most of the FB tradies install low end systems (TCL/midea etc).

If he installs higher-end systems then check if he's certified. For example with Daikin, if it's an non-daikin-certified installer there's only a 3 year parts warranty. If the installer is daikin-certified then it's 5 year warranty

£1.5k/room is suspiciously cheap. Check what it includes (some will need to hire an external sparky, for example)

Cheers, have asked some questions. I asked already about the brands and he said Mitsubishi, Samsung, Panasonic, and Toshiba plus others if I'm interested.

quote I had Daikin prefera.
