Hey chaps,

Went and viewed an Octavia L&K today with a friend which drove nicely and had enough toys to keep him happy. However, the tailgate opening had a noticeable crack/gap on one of the seam points.

Can anyone tell me if this is something to be worried about? I told him to walk away and we did pending some research! I'd upload photos but don't have any hosting.

Cheers

What am I looking at in those pictures? I can see the split join, but I can't tell where on the car it is. What part of the "boot opening"?

Err, it's the top of the boot opening (hole) along the top edge... .if it were a square, I hope that makes sense? Sorry :o

How did you even spot that!?

I'd just find another and have a look at it, if it's the same then no issue -I doubt it's a problem anyway, though I'm guessing it must have been pretty noticeable for you to spot it up the top of the boot

Looks like the seam where two pieces of metal meet, doesn't look bad.. no idea how you even noticed it tbh

I took two pics of each side as the sealer looked different between the two. Then I noticed the split when I opened the photos! I didn't see the split when I was looking at the car.

The pictures look like a vRS to me rather than an L&K?

It's possible it's had a repair there, but I'd have a really good look for any other signs in the boot floor or the welding around the sides of the tailgate aperture before concluding that and any possible paint issues. It might just be the sealant wasn't applied quite right at the factory.

Its definitely a l&k and definitely went dag dag dag with only 140 ponies! The boot floor (spare wheel well etc) look original, its missing some paint in the boot well though, I'm not sure if they should be completely painted in the spare wheel well but it definitely isn't. Seems to tail off as it gets to the rear of the car. The sides of the tailgate aperture looked normal to my untrained eyes!

Thanks for the reply Blueboy, and blimey its been bloody ages since I've seen you posting here! Hope you're well.

Edit : Looked at a mk1 Octavia this evening and the bootwell in that is also missing some / thin paint in the wheel well.

I'd say it's either a manufacturing fault or it's had a new rear quarter panel and they've not done a very good job of bonding it.

Given how common Octavias are you probably did the right thing by moving on and looking elsewhere. I imagine its not structural but I'd always be worried what might happen to the car in the event of an accident.

The l&k around here are rather sparse, there are tonnes of elegance etc but he wants xenons and half leather/full leather.

That looks fine to me, just looks like a welding seam.

RE: the boot floor, my Leon is the same - they just cut corners on painting areas that weren't going to be seen
