split/second

My first split/second race is up on youtube here. Not great driving, but you can see what to expect from the game.

(I didn't embed it because it's better in 720p.)

I can also confirm the vsync option does nothing - a bit irritating.

Graphics look very nice. is that a demo on pc you played there ?

And anyone who thinks 30fps is smooth enough should play this, and then play Burnout Paradise.

Did you run this game in Very High mode? If so, that is the problem there as it is very giltchy. Otheriwse, in High mode, I find it runs very smooth at 30 fps.

I downloaded the demo, and had a ton of problems (360 controller not really supported, stuck in rear-view mode).

Press "C" to change view?

There's two views, default rear-view or front-bonnet-less/low-wheel-view.

I tried the demo - you can't change any settings. (Although you can set the res through a command line switch if you want.) FPS was constant at 30, it did not fluctuate. 30fps is not smooth, 30fps is never smooth compared to 60. If you think 30fps is smooth, watch 60fps and realise how better it is. Amazing this age old argument is still raging, particularly on a PC forum.

Because it can depend on the game or the eyes of an individual? Everyone has different thresholds so no need to go all typical PC elitism about it. I've played plenty of 30fps racers in the past, PC or console, so I have no problem with it.

when i saw the ad for this i thought it might be worth a look but for £40 i think ill pass.

the US version of D2D sells it for $40, gotta love that 1:1 currency conversion rate.

I was posting in the console thread without realising (and it opened before this thread), been playing this on the PC and absolutely loving it. I put up screen shots in the other thread.

Apparently the demo was very different from the game, it's a shame because the majority base a purchase on the demo.

I think they've got it just right, it's a fun arcade style racer with some really new concepts. The destructibility of the course is not the only big deal, there are so many different race types from barrel eliminations to dodging Apache missiles.

One of the big factors in this game is how fast your racing position can change, which can make it aggravating but makes the win so much more ecstatic.

I'm really impressed by the graphics too, they aren't clean cut like GRID but they use a lot of hig res color and shaky power cam effects that work really well. Frankly I found the 30 fps to look very good and I'd happily be a person impressed by 30 fps rather than turn my nose at it.

MeMeMe: Is there any chance you could upload another 720p video of you driving the 'Detonation' mode in the 'Midway Pass' season. It's the 6th season and the Detonation mode is on the 'Power Plant' track (the game mode just before the Elite race).

That track will show off the game. I had about 15 attempts to get my time under 1:21:00.

Yeah 30 FPS isn't a problem for me as long as it stays there. Split Second ran ok on high with my old GTX260 but even then the frame rates dipped when stuff happened.
With my new GTX 480 i can run it on very high and it stays at 30 FPS no matter what is on the screen and i have 16AF and 16AA on with the Nvidia control panel.

Pretty racer but racing itself is very basic i found. Will probably be better suited to younger gamers.

This game seems to have awful controller/wheel support, which is pretty strange really.

I know what you mean, it's a shame when racing games don't offer the best controller support. It was the same for Dirt 1 + 2 and Grid, they allow you to drive the car but no menu navigation.

Try using xPadder, the earlier versions are completely free and it takes about 60 seconds to set up. I can now use my controller to navigate through the menu and control every little detail in the game as well as the in-race controls. Works perfectly.

I played the full game on a friend's computer (similar setup to mine).

I don't think I can - I probably won't get to play the game very often. Can you get to that track outside of career mode?
