Spore Becomes Most Pirated Game in History

Well im glad its a lot of EA's poorly thought out, lackluster titles up there.

The annoying thing however is that the COD4 pirated version works online, which is a real kick in the teeth for the devs as that means technically no reason to buy it. And that game was very good, AND had a good demo before hand as well.

Hopefully EA can learn from these figures though and stop putting that worthless DRM on their games.

Just looks like a list of the most advertised games to me, I would like to say spore is at the top because it has DRM, but tbh its more likely just the amount of TV time it got. Either way, it was rubbish and wouldnt even waste my time downloading it, nevermind spending money on it.

predominantly single player game, with no demo. thats all the reason someone would need to pirate a game, even to just try it out really. as there are no other means.

and you cant really get the best view of a game from just reading review after review.

most pirated game ever?i doubt it...commodore 64 has sold over 350 million units worldwide,i dont think those kind of sales will ever be reached again, it is still being in used in other countries...i reckon most pirated game is probably on one of those....cassette is easy to copy....and its cheap for people in the third world and is easily the best 8bit computer with over 15000 programs for it :)

And your saying that less than 350 million PC has been sold around the world

So why is cod4 still so high up the list?

Good game? check. Well developed multiplayer aspect? check. Demo? check.

I would assume what he means is that it's unlikely we'll see that sort of sales figure for a single specification.
PC sales include everything from basic office PC's with graphics that are barely able to run MS Office, to multi core systems with 4 1024mg videocards.

Or to put it another way, whilst the total number of "IBM compatible" PC's (which is what we tend to be using*), is much higher than the number of Commadore 64's, they aren't a standardised spec by any stretch of the imagination, which means that you cannot code anything but the most basic game and expect it to run on them (unlike the c64 where a game coded for one will work on all of them at the same level).

You just have to look at the Steam hardware survey to get an idea of the variation in the PC platform.

*So called because they all have their roots in the IBM clones, and still retain some of that legacy in things like the Bios's today.

ease of acquiring it i guess, retail price was expensive as well, and hasnt really come down much at all over time.

and it does work online so that does encourage pirating as people won't have the 'well ill need to buy it to play it online' attitude, which used to be the biggest reason to buy a game.

Of course but he has no figures for piracy on any one title on the C64 & we can only go by when records begun.

The price is still high because its still selling well.
And it cost no more than expected.

C64 games were not easy to copy, you couldnt just copy tape to tape and it would work.

Aye. Games get downloaded because they can be downloaded, no other reason. Sure, usually the fact that multiplayer is force CD-keys or whatever will account for people having to buy it to play online, but if some people don't have to, they won't.

The only real reason Spore has been pirated so much is because it was this years mega hype game. As was said already, this is pretty much a mirror of the best-selling games.

1.7 million - that's shocking, and rather upsetting.

To think that if even a tenth would have bought the game, at say £20, that's £3.4million that the pub/devs are short. Assuming my maths isn't retarded.

Sickening, tbh.

It doesn't upset me at all. It acts as a very strong message to EA that archaic DRM that harms legitimate buyers will backfire every time.

(Plus the game was absolute *****).

Im surprised people havent mentioned Steam in all of this. Notice there isnt one game mentioned where steam is the primary delivery system for them. I take it davenport lyons is mass mailing people ransom letters that have downloaded all these games . . . . . And this is probably worldwide remember.
