Sports Direct Arena

it's not just the die hard fans Ashley has ****** off this time.

The council have refused to change any street signs or anything else in the city to refer to it as "sports direct arena" the council have said it will stay as st james park as far as they are concerned.

Similarly the Olympic committee have told him to go jump and during the olympics it will be st james park as well not his stupid name :D

Nice to see Ashley handling the situation with his normal media savvy and ensuring that everyone is on board :p

I was listening to an interview on the BBC, yesterday. Basically, the Newcastle guy was saying how the Northern Rock sponsorship is ending, soon, and they need to sell the shirt sponsorship, and hopefully the stadium naming rights (which could get £8m - £10m/year)... ideally, as a package.

The idea of whacking the Sports Direct Arena up as the name is to help raise the profile/possibility of naming rights, to potential suitors.

Now, say they do get £8m/year for the rights... that's the wages of two £80k/week players, each year... isn't that worth it?!

No.

This may be short sighted but I would honestly rather do without. Get a good shirt sponsor, whore out the team in whatever other which ways he can think of to fill his pockets but I would rather stick with almost 150 years of history over 1 more overpayed player in the squad every season. Though that may make me a minority in footie fans these days I accept :(

There was no point in doing it though, it's not as if Santander (or whoever else) are going to come along, and go, "nah, I don't want the stadium naming rights as I just honestly don't know what it would look like, can you please rename it to The Sports Direct Arena first so I can see what that looks like". They already know what they would call it and what it would look like, they don't need a pre-school explination from them saying "Look this is what you could have", all FCB has to do is say "We're selling the sole naming rights of the stadium, give me some cash and you can call it whatever the hell you like, any takers?". What they've done I think will prove to have been a worse decision than if they'd just sold it off to Greggs the Bakers first (or whoever), as now, all the prospective sponsorship companies who could have stepped into the breach and bought the naming rights, will now be back peddling as they've seen the furore it's kicked up.

He couldnt sell the rights because of the scenario I outlined. This is his way around it and some money is better for him than no money.

I doubt that's the reason why nobody was willing to buy the rights. In fact a fan backlash would have only created more publicity for any sponsor.

The reality is that there were no takers.

This has to be a bet by Ashley to see how much he can troll the supporters :p

But why does the stadium name matter? Literally everything is commercialised in the upper echelons of football, nowadays. I just don't understand the objection, in all honesty.

As you say everything in football is commercialised these days, I would rather all my clubs history was not commercialised as well. Simple as that, nothing to do with Ashley hate or anything else, I just want my clubs history to remain intact over the addition of 1 extra player.

It's not your club. It's Mike Ashley's club. He can do whatever he wants with it.

The clubs history can't ever be changed, and it's far more than the name of the stadium anyway.

I'm not a big fan of the commercialism of everything (who is?), but sadly it's the way things are going. Plenty of clubs already play at sponsored stadiums, and in the next few years a lot more will.

What I'm concerned about is whether any real effort will be made to find a new sponsor for the shirt or the stadium, and Sports Direct will remain there for free. The exposure and growth of Sports Direct is possibly worth more to Mike Ashley than the £10m per season for the stadium, and however much for the shirts.

Only time will tell.

its pretty shameful that he did it in the way he did..and I am a sunderland fan!

it like he wants to erase everything about newcastle prior to him turning up

Jeez it's only a name and for £10 million a year you can call my clubs stadium anything g you like

Except there's no income from this name change unless a third party buys the sponsorship deal.

Virgin Money went for the shirt deal, but didn't want the stadium deal because it's such a caustic situation.

Errm, hasn't your owner put in millions from Sports direct to name the stadium as such, as in Sports direct the company has paid Newcastle FC for the sponsorship, its not as much as they hope a third party will eventually pay, but its income for Newcastle.

While its not technically different than Ashley plonking another X million into the club, Sports Direct get their name about, and they pay for the privilege. A different sponsor would hopefully pay more, but its less money out of Ashley's pocket and its only caustic because the fans have decided to vilify just about everything Ashley had done to that point, despite saving them from crushing debt, and putting together an excellent team on top of that.

No, neither Ashley nor Sports Direct have paid for the naming rights. They claim that they've renamed it the Sports Direct Arena to show the value to a potential partner. That's nonsense though; the reality is that they've tried to sell the naming rights for a while and failed so rather than go without, Ashley might as well get some benefit out of it himself by giving his company free exposure.

As Baz says, Sports Direct aren't paying for this name change at all.

The £300m that Ashely has put into the club is another matter. :p
