There's a speed camera outside a highschool near me which makes everyone slow down. Is that pointless?
Everyone is saying that these mobile speed cameras should be made clearer but imo that would be even more pointless. If you advertise that they're there then yes, people will slow down. But the other 99% of the time when the vans aren't there then no-one is going to bother.
If the speed cameras are kept hidden yet people know that they are there occasionally then surely this would achieve more and less people are likely going to take the chance?
Or am I talking out my arse?
I see what you are saying mate, but TBH its surely those that dont drive that bit of road everyday that are the greatest threat to safety?
Say for instance there is a bit of road I drive nearly everyday that you would think you could quite happily drive through at your normal 30-35mph, however on this road is a hidden entrance to a school which comes out on a very narrow pavement and locals know to take it easy along there at those sort of times kids are likely to be around.
How does that help you as someone not journeying through there everyday?
Would a hidden camera around the danger spot slow you down?
How about hitting a child at 35mph and killing them, then getting a NIP in the post a fortnight later?
Or a big bright yellow camera or a flashing slow down sign?
The idea of safety cameras is to PREVENT accidents and deaths, not increase the treasury coffers. In the case above it would have done nothing for the parents of the kid...
An extreme example, but if its the case that they are there for safety, why are they only placed in revenue generating sites then, hidden round corners or at anywhere you could possibly open your car up? Why not outside every school, playpark or places where pedestrians are likely to be at risk?
