I visited East Croydon's Spread Eagle pub on Monday and they were showing Django Unchained for free upstairs.

The cinema is really their upstairs bar with a large projector screen and some reasonable speakers. There were some niggles: they seemed to have turned the bass to max, had left the lights on full in the room behind (some blackout curtains would have helped) and unless you got there early and grabbed a sofa then you'd be sitting on pub chairs (with a table or two for your drinks). However, I had a couple of pints watching an excellent movie with mates and would happily go again.

What I want to know is how can they show a recent movie for free? Will it be costing them quite a bit and they just hope to make it back in drink and food sales? Or is there some sort of setup where film clubs can show a movie as long as they don't charge?

Also....Django at 2hours 40 + 2 pints = a little uncomfy if you want to watch the whole movie

You see this a fair bit abroad when you're on your hols.

Allways found it a nice and easy start to the evening, chill over a few drinks before ramping it up later on.

Funny you should mention it, i was thinking the same thing about a pub near where i live, they have a garden/field that backs on to a wooded treeline that would be ideal for an outdoor screen for a film on a summer evening.

Id sit there all night were they to do it. As to what their doing in croydon, it's hard to imagine them coughing up the fee's... but hey you never know, they do it a fair bit in states, a popular thing, and it's not like they're hiding doing it.

I've heard about some "popup" cinemas under road flyovers in London in the Summer. there's also the filmfour event at Somerset House each year (which I always end up missing). A quick google: http://www.popupscreens.co.uk/

Hmmm just looking at the Somerset House one and it's not quite free anymore....

Predator + Gremlins 2 looked like fun until they wanted £18.50+ booking fee

£18.50 i'd have gone with that were i local.. the untouchables would have been my draw.

They seem to be selling out for the most part, outdoor cinema realy is all that in my opinion.

I need to see if i can source anything local, glad you bought this up, realy want to be doing this some time soon.

true...not many cinemas you can go in London for less than £15. Though knowing my luck it would rain. ah and yeah it's sold out anyway!

I haven't watched Gremlins 2 in years....might just see about a dvd
