So my boss asked me to "Sort out his pc" the other day. And after bloody ages downloading updates for f-ing windows me (Cries) on a 56k modem (Crys harder) things were looking great (Shrugs). He had a lot of spy ware on his comp, he uses it for Business but I’m pretty much guessing his teenage kids use it for more adventurous things if you catch my drift.

So I downloaded spybot sd and ran it. And it worked perfectly, I must have caught about 300 odd entry’s on his comp. And the internet connection was still present. It then said it would have to run on a reboot. So I did just that.

It did its thing and wiped the rest of the stuff and all was well, or I just assumed it was.

Now for some random reason it wont bring up any pages in IE or FF and I’m pretty confused as it was working quite well before that. Has any one else had this happen to them?

What exactly happens?
Without a lot more detail (output from ipconfig /all would be a start, result from nslookup, mebbe even a couple of pings and a tracert), the answer's about as long as a bit of string :p

Kill Millnellium Edition. Install XP home install MS antispy and AVG free set auto update to invisible mode. Spyware need never bother you again.

Do they connect via modem or are you only using the modem to work on it?
If they have BB just give it back.
Else.
Step one re-install the modem. If it's done something on reboot it's messing with the registy, it may well have nuked the modem settings.
Step 2 check internet options, these may also have been reset to default as some antispy programs can do that, some do it unless you tell them not to.

Ok so here’s a recap:

Windows ME
No obvious firewall
Connection Established – No info back
SpybotSD – ran it, found files, erased files
Firefox and IE are dead
I pinged 217.12.5.162 which was onetel the message I received was Destination host unreachable
Sent 4 – Received 0 – Lost 4 (100%loss)
Updated IE before all this
Set it as the default connection
It’s a dial up account

And to top it all off it connected before I Ran SpybotSd in the first place :S

Try running HiJackThis and post the log somewhere we can see it.

Try running LSPFix as you may of removed some spyware that was messing with the TCP/IP stack. There could be remnants left.

We do need to know what ipconfig /all is reporting. This way we can tell if you have an IP Address. (We need these details after you have used the modem to connect to the Internet)

Why are you connecting to the Internet without a firewall? This is just opening you up to troubles? :)

With WinME you can sometimes get to a point it is quicker to backup and reinstall eveyrthing. Depends how many programs are installed.

Have you tried using Spybot SD's "repair" feature and "restored" some of the items it removed? You should at least be able to look into the "repair" list and see what the last items were that it took off during that reboot. This will then give you (and us) a better clue as what to fix.

Also - try setting up a new dialup connection.
For example: UK2.
Telephone: 0845653000
Username: uk2
Password: uk2

This will let you know if it is something wrong with your ISP details.

same thing happened when i ran msoft onecare...had to make new connection to internet through control panel.etc as it somehow totaly lost any con to internet

There are many bits of Spyware that will try and replace your ISP details with their own. So you will often have to correct the ISP details after clearing out spyware. Depends what infects you. :)
