I did however have an awesome idea for ordering food in a restaurant for the geeky/socially inept.
QR codes on the tables. Scan them with your smartphone/tablet, opens a web url with the menu, and passes the table number as a parameter. Select your items from the menu, choose your options (e.g. extras, how raw you want your steak, any allergies etc.), click "Order", and your order gets sent straight to the kitchen.
When it comes time to pay, don't worry about waiting for your bill and faffing around with change, simply put in your card details or log in via Paypal/insert other online payment method here.

There is a number of restaurants in San Diego that have an iPad on each table and customers order all their food and drink using the iPad. The iPads also have a credit card reader attached so that the bill can be paid without having to wave a waitress over.

If you could just change the table number with a simple GET parameter, it'd open up the whole system to complete abuse (sending other tables ridiculous amounts of food for 'fun', for example).

How cool would it be if there was a restaurant where you had to execute an SQL query to order your food?
Presumeably a restaurant set up by a Virgin

Well this thread gave me a couple of giggles. Thanks op for at least that.

I don't see why everyone is so negative on this idea?
How is it any different from going to a restaurant where the menu is all in French or Italian, and you have to speak French to order?
