Squash

Holy **** !!!!!
My regular playing partner is a leftie and I always said he had an advantage by always receiving my serve on his forehand.

Lost my only game so far this season 3-0 because I had a hangover. Shame as I started to recover towards the end and slaughtered her in the final 2 games after losing 3-0.

Yeah definately serve from the other side when playing a leftie.
Playing squash with a hangover is the worst. I did it the other week with a throbbing headache. Every hit of the ball or just moving around the court almost incapacitated me.

I've only ever been hit when an inexperienced opponent has turned 360 before taking a shot (normally after a fast cross court off side and back wall). Still, you generally get the point if they hit you in that scenario.

Must have played him 50 times so kind of wish I knew that a bit earlier. Saying that, he really ought to serve to my forehand because for some reason my backhand returns are better. In fact, I'm confident I can nail it down the wall right to the back corner almost every time on my backhand return, skimming the wall all the way. I just nail that shot, but for some reason can't perform to anywhere near that level on the rest of my game!

I feel good about the game though so I'm sure with hard work and practise the rest of my game will pick up. For me, I just need to 'click' one day. For snowboarding, I went from nothing to intermediate in 2 minutes but for the first 2.5 weeks I was awful.

But yeah deff don't play with hangovers. I don't drink much to be fair but 3 of us went out with out parters all together for the first time and I had loads. Got up at 4pm the next day...and I only got up because I had a squash game. I think I played the whole game in slow motion - it's easy to see why you shouldn't drive too soon the day after drinking!! Brain hurts just trying to work out what's going on long enough to follow the ball

Been getting back into squash for the last couple of months after a 3 yr hiatus. I'm loving it. Definitely one of the most intense, fast, and exhausting racket games.

Only thing i will say about rackets is, buy last years model if you can. The technology doesn't seem to change much each year, but the current models seem to cost several times more than the previous year's models. Also worth getting a feel for the racket before you buy as weight and balance makes a difference even for beginners.

Yes don't buy on weight alone. Balance is just as important. Head heavy is probably better for beginners because it's likely that there is more strength in the frame and it encourages a proper swing through the ball, as opposed to lightly swatting at it, as is tempting with a light racket.

Just bought myself some Asics Gel Fireblast shoes and a Black Knight Sky Racketball racket. Really enjoying racketball at the moment.

Been getting into this recently, playing against a friend who is annoyingly better and fitter than me!

I'm really struggling with my serve, I seem to either loop it up for him to just volley away, or I hit it out on the side wall. Any tips?

How is everyone's Squash going - still playing?
I am becoming a tad obsessed!

We have entered our first team squash league and are currently second from bottom of the table in the bottom league lol. The losses are getting less severe though so hopefully we can finish near mid table. On the plus side the first team (which are at a much much higher level than our team/me) are top of the table in league 1. They have also managed to get the assistant national coach playing for them and a female pro playing for them last week). I also went to the gym a few months back (just before the Commonwealth games) and only one court was free. Turned out James Willstrop and Chris Simpson were playing so just watched that for 30 minutes. Somehow makes the level of skill so much obvious when they are playing on the court you usually play on.

Its the final of the world championship today as well and I have decided to subscribe to PSA squash TV so will be watching that live at 14:30.

Any PSA TV subscribers? Ashour - El Shorbagy world championship final is just ridiculous!

I watched the highlights of it and it looked like a hell of a match like. Those 2 are immense and it's great to see Ashour back - so entertaining to watch.

Just bought tickets to the national championships in Manchester next Feb so hopefully see some good games there.

Yeh it was incredible. Ashour has such a great variety of shots. He kept Elshorbagy at the front of the court with his perfect volley drops and eventually wore him down. It was very close though!

I'm going to the British Squash Grand Prix in Manchester in December. Hoping I'll get some free tickets through the club.

Yeah I am a subscriber. It was awesome. The rally in the last game when the score was 6-5 was amazing.
National championships in Manchester does sound good. Might have to get some tickets.

Not sure what's going on with my Squash lately. I failed to get promoted last month after a catastrophic 3-0 loss to someone who has never even come close to beating me before.

First game this month and cruise to a 2-0 lead in 10 minutes then I just lost the plot again and he came back 2-2. I seem to just go through phases where I give up mentally or lose all focus - and suddenly look like I can't even play.

I sorted my head out and crushed him the following 3 games but it's really annoying me!!

When I get into a rally I can compete with all of the top club players yet my focus problem means I get stuck halfway down the leagues.

Suppose there are not really many tips to be had for that part of the game. My technique and shot selection has come on a lot since coaching but my mental focus is holding me back hugely.

maybe it's just as simple as putting pressure on myself to get promoted because I know these players currently are not at the same level as me and I want to get higher up. I'll relax next game and just play the % game let them run around after the ball.
I've beaten people from work who are Top league in better clubs than the one I play at and I'm down in league 7 at the min...lol Makes no sense.
