Squeaking when turning steering wheel at low speed

I have the same issue with my BMW. It's just some of the foam padding within the steering column assembly rubbing on the bearing as it's turned in my case.

OK, so I am back on with this again.

I finally managed to get a diagnosis from another garage in June. It is the CV Boots.

They said they were fine but just due to age they were creaking. Sprayed with lubricant. Noise went away.

Been getting progressively worse ever since and now really quite bad so asked for a price to replace. Been quoted £250 for both.

I literally have no idea if this is good or not as I have never come across this issue before - Anyone experienced it?

Is there no better way they can diagnose it than changing parts until it stops?

Unfortunately, sometimes it just works out that way.

Repair is often part of the diagnostic process, especially with vague things like strange noises.

Ever watched "House"?

Sometimes you just do have to go down a couple of blind alleys before getting to the right destination.

Repair comes after diagnosis. Randomly replacing parts is not 'repair' and suggests a lack of knowledge of experience in diagnosing. A car (even a modern one) is vastly less complex than the human body.

You realise that's just an analogy and he isn't literally comparing car mechanics to Hugh lauries diagnoses?

I can think of many instances where it is easier or more cost affective to replace a part than to hunt down difficult to diagnose gremlins.
