SR-71

I like the band.
I have no idea what you're talking about though.

I believe benm's 18 today, he wants his first bit of legal arse fun and he's chosen you ;)

back on topic -

I think the SR-71 has to be one of the best sircraft ever designed. If I remember correctly, it is twice the size of an f-15 but has half the radar image thanks to it's shape.

For me, the only thing I find close to it in awe factor is the A-10 warthog, but that is a completely different class of plane

Ooh how very witty. I'm afraid you're going to have to explain how being an arse makes you happy? Each to their own I suppose.

I wasn't intending to be witty. You being an arse has no relation to me being happy.

You dislike how I come across when I am negative when people do stupid things, whereas you are negative for no reason, which is worse?

Interesting topic: check
Basic spelling and grammar correct: check
You are an arse: check

Yep, I'm happy.

You being an arse has no relation to me being happy.

No, for what it's worth I dislike unnecessary, negative and unhelpful spam made on a consistant basis by one person.

I was just checking you're ok. For some reason you decided that made me an arse.

Lovely plane, was chatting to the father in law a while ago and he was saying how he got to have a poke about one when on a work trip to the US in the 90s, can't remember where he was but obviously somewhere they were keeping one at the time.

Yup. You could take the Blackbird 200 years into the future and I bet it would still look more futuristic and kick-arse than anything around.

I was wrong 1962 was when it rolled out and into the air! Bloody eck, that's only 17 years after propellor planes were flying about in WWII!

wasn't the stealth bomber similar age?

We certainly haven't advanced as much as we should have. But I suppose most advancements have been aerodynamic and electrical rather than power.

Is it just me or is that story a little silly?
Great read, but considering its a stealth plane, its getting spotted a lot? :p.

The heat generated from going Mach 3 showed up on pretty much any radar you wanted, the signature of the actual plane is rather low, however.

Don't thnk it was ever designed as Stealth :) just designed to go as high and as fast so as to make it highly improbable an AA defense could shoot it down.

I imagine that at a certain height and speed a plane can become invulnerable, i.e. the amount of fuel needed to propel a missile to a high enough altitude and speed would probably mean that the misile would therefore be too big and heavy to ever get close. Baring any real leap in rocket propellants.

I guess in the future you could have an unmanned UAV modified in someway to carry some form of AA missile, have it orbiting a territory at a high altitude indefinately and have some form of radar guidance, when it spots the high flying and fast jet, it launches missiles from altitidue giving a better chance for interception.

It did use special fuel (JP-7) but the comment about dropping a lit match in it and the match going out is true for any jet fuel (paraffin).

Doh, that was always something I found amazing when I was young. The aura has been spolied now :)
Didn't know until now it was the same for all jet fuel. I thought paraffin was quite flammable.
