Heading to Sri Lanka for a fortnight at the end of November.
Anyone been? Any tips, must do, suggestions?

I like good food, good drinks, a nice beach, some hiking, and some understated luxury mixed in with fun hostels....

November gives you good weather in the South, we did 16days last July and skipped the South, We did Columbo > Wilpattu > Trincomalee > Sigiriya > Ella > Nuwara Eliya > Kandy > Columbo.
Do you have an itinerary?

Unawatuna near Galle is like paradise on earth. At least it was when we last went. Food is out of this world too!

Sri Lanka was on my list to go with my other half but one thing we couldn't agree on was the food there. I love spicy food, curries, everything... whereas my other half is quite sensitive to spice. We actually have a great Sri Lankan restaurant down the road which I hardly ever get to go to :o Is all of the food in Sri Lanka spicy, or is it easy to find alternatives? She went through Malaysia back in the day (before we met) and hated it because of the food...

I guess the food tends towards being quite spiced, but it’s not all blow your head off kind of stuff. The main tourist areas will have plenty of choice. I’m firmly in your camp and would eat curry three times a day if I could!

I went to Negombo, about a year before the Tsunami.

We had a private driver for most of our trip, so we visited quite a lot of places, mostly Buddhist temples, there is loads of them, we also went to a lot of places of the tourist track as my dads side of the family has a history of living over there as a missionary, went to a school and church and old department store where my Grandad worked, lots of history was still there when we went.
My only gripe was I got the ***** towards the end of the trip, so be careful where you eat, we were on the road a lot so was stopping at various places that had buffets with lots of curries, and I only wonder now how long some of it was sitting there.

On above posts, I can't recall the curries being that spicy, more mild from what I remember.

Agreed. When I went there the food was mostly curries but none of them were particularly spicy. The hottest thing I ate all trip was an omelette. Was getting my breakfast and there was a guy cooking eggs to order. Whilst I was stood there he knocked up an omelette for another staff member. I thought it looked nice so I asked for one the same. First bite took my head off - rather than chives it was loaded with super hot chillies, which I wasn't expecting first thing in the morning!

The train up to the tea plantations is a nice trip, and tour of the tea factories. Sigirya (spelling) is neat too.

Really enjoyed my trip there though it was a long time ago in the aftermath of the tsunami so very much in recovery mode. Went to the turtle hatchery on the cost which was super cool seeing all the little turtles.
