Is there anything coming out shortly that's worth waiting for? They seem a little more expensive than when I last checked but other than that, good time to buy?

The 840 PRO looks like quite a good option though I am open to suggestions for alternatives. I don't like the idea of my SSD wearing out over time, so what ever drive can prevent that most effectively and is relatively fast is what I'm looking for.

Will be used for general browsing and the usual games and programs.

Thanks

I've no idea what's in the SSD pipeline, but until SATA 4 arrives they won't be much faster than the current drives.

As an 830 owner, I'm a big fan of Samsung - cheap, reliable, good longevity and decent software - and the 840 Pro should be even better. Crucial M4's are highly regarded, and you can't go wrong with Intel (if you've got the £££).

Ignore headline/benchmark speeds and look for reliability, compatability (particularly with laptops) and lifespan, ideally with a 5 year warranty.

SSDs will continue to get cheaper, that's an absolute guarantee. Check out Crucial's new M500, they do a 1TB for about £500, that's 50p a GB!

As a rule of thumb, when it comes to storage just buy what you need at the time. Don't try and second guess what might come out in the future. Just think, how much am I willing to spend? And how much capacity do I need right now? And then go with the brand you like the look of the most.
