I've read here and windows 7 forum that the 128GB Samsung 830 is marginally better than the Crucial M4, so I'm pretty decided to get that. I've also seen it cheaper than the M4. I'm also pretty decided on the Seagate 2TB Sata 3 7200rpm 64MB (ST2000DM001) after reading Sin Chase's review.

Good choices?

Will the Seagate be as fast or faster than my WD 1TB RE3?

Btw, I know they're Sata 3, and my motherboard is old and only Sata 2.

I've now completed a purchase for the Samsung 830 128GB SSD.

I've also placed an order for the Seagate ST2000DM001 but haven't completed the purchase as I'm having serious doubts. So many people say that it makes this chirping noise which means extra load cycles, which apparently means a probable reduced lifespan of 2 to 3 months. And Seagate's warranty is only a year, reduced from 2 years I think. Probably because they don't have much confidence in the drive? Should I be put off by this? Also, several people report failures. I know WD have failures too, but it seems WD is known to be more reliable. This Seagate 2TB is an absolute bargain at under £70 but should I steer clear and spend almost twice as much on a 5 year guarantee 2TB WD drive?

huu yeh its a tough one
i personally dont trust any hdd, ive lost a ton of pics and vids that way
2 backups if its important ><

there are a few reasons why i'd personally avoid the 2tb st2000dm001 - firstly they use 3 677mb platters for recently manufactured drives instead of the claimed 1tb per platter. earlier and reviewed models did use 1tb platters. this means you're getting a slower drive that's 50% more likely to fail, with more noise, heat, and weight than the earlier, reviewed (1tb per platter) models. secondly as you mentioned they have the APM/lcc thing that's found in the current crop of seagates that causes degradation and lots of noise. finally the warranty is only 1 year - wouldn't trust it.

Yep, agreed. Apparently the ones made in thailand are good and if they're made in china they're not. There's a thread here which talks about variations within these drives. http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barrac...Seagate-seriously-cripled-through/td-p/161924

It's a lottery. I think I'll avoid.

p.s i meant 667mb, not that it matters.

shame there don't seem to be that many good or good value hdds at the moment. if you could stand to wait a little, i'd stick with your 1tb drive until things became reasonable pricewise

i've got a 3tb seagate, no problems with it so far (granted its a thailand-made one)
and its supersilent too. hell my psu makes more noise than it lol

It sems that the ONLY 2TB drive worth me getting and that has a long 5 year warranty is the Western Digital 2TB Caviar Black WD2002FAEX. Almost twice as much money though at £131. :(

seagate owns samsung's hdds now sadly. any samsungs sold from about 2011 are seagate-made. means all that's left is seagate, toshiba, and western digital

Yes its seagate owned but still a Samsung design,I have one of the newer f4s and its identical to the Samsung made f4,even the chips on the PCB are stamped Samsung

Guys, if I want to buy WD and stay within my budget of £70 to £80, I'd have to consider mostly 1TB. Can anyone kindly advise me which of these they think would suit me best or well enough for gaming, streaming, music and pictures?

Also, can I get away with the 2TB caviar green 5900rpm for my needs, I mean, is it going to be slow, or only negligible compared to the other drives? And seeing as it has the lowest warranty, does that suggest it might be less reliable than the 5 year warranty drives? I'd prefer 2TB if it's going to be reliable and fast enough, but will go for 1TB otherwise. Btw, I only have sata 2 on my motherboard if that helps.

WD 1TB Caviar Black 5 year warranty
WD 1TB RE4 Enterprise 5 year warranty
WD 1TB RE3 3 year warranty
WD WD20EARX 2TB Caviar Green 2 year warranty

After much research, I've bought the Caviar Black 1TB. :) Also a USB Sata/IDE enclosure so I can put my old 1TB RE3 or IDE drives in it. Less cables in my case.
