I have recently installed a OCZ SSD and have placed W7 on it, but was wondering how I open programs from the old drive while using the SSD as my boot drive. Does anyone know? I've surfed the net for some information but got several different answers and they all seemed a bit complicated. Is there not some simple way of doing this?

Are trying to run programs off your old boot drive, having connected this as a secondary drive? If so, then I would always recommened re-installing things from scratch myself.

Can I install them onto the secondary drive and run them off there while still booting off the SSD?
If so, how do I do this?

When you install new progrms just change the directory to the hdd instead of the ssd, all programs should work no problems, I did it last night with wow and didn't even have to re install, just dragged it to my hdd and ran the startup program, it sorted itself out.

Alternatively you can edit your registry entries for each program with the new target and startup folders for each program etc, but since you were asking for help with something like this anyway, I assume that will be a bit beyond you.

it varies on every operating system, and from program to program, youd need to have seen it before or know someone who has it installed and get them to export the reg entry. its easier to just re install in your case though, since i doubt you have any of your reg entries saved from your old install?

well, boot that up and click start>run and type in regedit
once that loads do a search for mklink and when it finds it right click the main folder on the left (for mklink) and export it, repeat this process until you have all of the entries.

Boot up into new system, make a backup of your registry and then double click the files you made, this will import them into your registry. You will need to go through each of the entries and update the filepath to be D:\ instead of C:\ (guessing on your drive letters, but just make it correct)

Then, it "should" work. It really depends on what os your coming from though. If its xp the reg entries can be VERY different, or exactly the same, so its a bit of trial and error which programs this works for.

Why cant you just re install it? If its because youve lost your code, then you might get away with backing up your folder, installing a new mklinks there and then restoring that folder (this will give you registry keys) but that would depend where it stores its licensing data.

u seem to be overcomplicating things abit.

what programs are you trying to run, and y do you want them not on the SSD?

its not that often u will need to use mklink to put stuff on different drives, most programs u can choose where u install them too, so u just put them on the drive u want to run them from.

most programs dont care what drive they are run from.
the only time when u'll need to use mklink is if the program forces itself to install in a set place

You cant just run most programmes that are on there now as they are set up to be tied into the os on your old hard drive.

With any new programmes just install them onto the old hd whilst running in the operating system on your ssd, then whilst the program will be stored on your old hd, it will run using the os on your ssd.

Nearly every program now lets you chose to do this on install. Actually changing things round so you dont have to reinstall the programmes is a bit more complex and it is probably best just grabbing all the data you want to save reinstalling.
