SSD and RAID advice

Hi Guys,

So I'm thinking of buying a 40 - 50GB SSD drive solely to install Windows 7 on.

I'm thinking of setting up a RAID 0 on a couple of 1TB HDD's for quicker file transfer. I'm going for HDD's for the cost to storage space ratio.

I need to know a couple of things. Can this be done first of all? I essentially want the system to boot from the SSD drive but use the RAID array as it's storage (so for music, videos, games etc) I don't want to store anything else on the SSD apart from Windows really.

Secondly can you recommend the best components for this? presuming I'll need a RAID controller and some relatively inexpensive but decent performance HDD's, and of course a recommended SSD - is 50GB necessary? could I get away with 30GB?

Regarding the size SSD I would need for Windows 7, do you think 30GB will be enough?

I'm on a bit of a budget you see lol.

any recommended HDD's?
 
Is running RAID 0 on spinners wise? Is the boost in speed really worth the increased risk of failure data loss?

Get a 60GB SSD for Windows/Programs, a 128/256GB SSD for Games and a 1000GB Western Digital for Data/Videos etc

With the speed of newer hard drives, there's less of a case for needing RAID0. Unless you need a large scratch disk for video editing or something.
 
Hi guys, thanks for the advice so far, I am tempted by the option of SSD for Windows, SSD for Games (I guess I'd need a pretty large SSD for this, but pricey maybe?) and a 1TB HDD for video, I was hoping that maybe RAID 0 on 2 1 TB drives might make up for a bit of the performance lapse?

Unless you guys don't think that RAID 0 is really worth it?

PS, My motherboard is quite old, it's ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO, but after a nice shiny new GPU and some storage upgrades I think it should still be able to do the job?

PS - thanks Bledd, I think you're probably right that a 256GB ssd might be enough for my games..... I'm just thinking that a high performance one might be pricy - I'm poor/***** haha

Also thanks for the advice I will go for a 60GB SSD for Windows :)
 
The price of a 120 is a lot less than I thought. You'd never have to worry about space with a 120
