Hi Guys

I've got a 64Gb SSD on the way that I want to use as a boot drive - I was wondering if there is a way of tranfering my OS onto this easily from the existing HDD to the SSD given that the HDD is much larger and hasn't been partitioned to seperate the OS from other files

Is it worth the hasle or should I just do a fresh install of Windows 7 on the SSD?

Thanks

Do a fresh install.

Get the latest chipset and other drivers for your parts.

Fit the SSD and disconnect the harddrive.

Switch the SATA controller from IDE to AHCI within the BIOS.

Install Win7 plus updates and drivers etc.

Re-fit the harddrive and wipe it clean.

Hi I actually put together a new rig with all updates etc etc and didnt know about switching to AHCI in the bios what will happen if I was to do this now seeing as Windows etc is all installed??

Hello people
I already installed windows 7 in IDE mode (noob error), on a crucial M4
Is it important to change over to AHCI?

AHCI mode gives the best performance for SSD's.

You need to change the SATA Mode from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS.

But you can't just do that otherwise your system won't boot.

You need to apply the "Fix it" here first.

So first run the "Fix it" in the link, restart the PC and go straight into the BIOS, change the SATA mode to AHCI, save the changes and the PC will start again and you'll be using AHCI mode.
